I am an international student who is finishing high school this summer. I plan to take a major in Economics, but Ithink one of my mistakes was that i only applied to four universities. The other is that I didnt put a lot of effort into preparing for the SAT and had a score of 1740. Everything else in my app was really outstanding, but I think that was the thing that turned me down. I applied to University of Chicago, Stanford, Harvard and Columbia. I was planning to take a year off to only prepare for the SAT and take it again now in a more serious fashion. But, i was wondering if my probability of getting in doesnt diminish if i intend to reapply to these ones (among others this time). Do colleges like these take less seriously your app if they see they have rejected you earlier?

Your mistake was applying only to Chicago, Stanford, Harvard and Columbia. Applying only to those four would be a huge strategic error for the most qualified American applicant. They are extremely selective, and the competition among international applicants is even more intense than the competition among domestic applicants.

If you plan to reapply to any or all of those universities, you should accomplish something highly significant during the intervening year, that will give them cause to reverse their previous decision. I’m not really an expert in these matters, but I rather doubt that merely improving your SAT score will suffice.

Just higher scores won’t get you into the schools you applied to this year. I’m not sure what you were thinking applying as an intnl with a 1700, and I think you still don’t understand American college admissions. Read some books!

Then what should I Do if I really want to be considered in next year Classes?
