Reason #390282 public schools are "fun"...

So a few months ago these kids were sexually harassing my girlfriend in their native language. I've had 6 years of education in their language, so I let them know I could understand them. Their attention shifted to me, and they started going off on me. I got sick of it, so I said a few choice words to them. I got a bottle of coke thrown at my head... a full bottle of coke.

Whatever. I ignored them.

The next few weeks they slapped my head every day.

Keep in mind that I'm no little guy. At 5'8'' 190, I'm quite built and very athletic. I could take these guys, but I would never do it... just because I don't like fighting and I don't want to blemish my record.

So my mom got sick of it, and talked to her friend who is an administrator. He came up with a way to make the kid stop without him thinking that I had told him... So he did that.

It's been fine until today. My friend and I were in line at lunch, and one of the kids was a few people in front of us. He grabbed my friend to the side and asked if I was talking about him. My friend told him no. Then the kid said something along the lines of "Watch out for him. He's gay, if you don't watch out he'll grab your.." and you can guess the rest. Anyway my friend ignored him. But anyway, word on the street is that this kid is in a gang! Woohoo! It's even funnier because he's the son of one of the school security guards.

Anyway, the point of this is... that in a school that is ranked 141 in the US News high school rankings, I have to put up with gang threats from a plethora of gangs. I find it funny, but I know something like this would get to other people. Our school isn't even that bad. It's a traditionally minority filled school, but about a decade ago a Health Academy and an IB program were added to "diversify" the campus a little. Now it's just a normal semi-urban school where no one gets shot or anything... just a lot of kids that haven't ever really experienced the "hard life" that most real gang members live through who think they're tough.

Anyone have similar experiences to share?

There's plenty of "wangsters" at my school, but they don't do much. Besides the occasional vandalism of school property no one really pays them much attention. There has been a steady flow of some kids with sketcky backgrounds in the past few years. It's kind of weird seeing these kids considering the town I live in is EXTREMELY wealthy. They just don't fit in.

Since you already have a girlfriend, don't think about it too much. If it helps, your sweet satisfaction may be in the thought that you will have a networth well over ten times of those of the "gangsters." Oh sure, maybe you'll get laid less than them in high school, but since you won't die of gunshot or AIDS, it's God's humorous way of equaling things out.

I'm glad I go to Catholic School. There isnt really any violence or any gangs. But you'll have a fight occasionally. For the most part, I hate public school kids. They are so trashy and rude.

That is the most gross generalization I have heard in my life. There are millions that go to public school. Millions. I find it insulting that you'd call such a large group collectively trashy and rude.

Heh no matter where you go, you're going to meet some trashy or rude people, nymets. :] Visirale, I'm proud of you for not fighting back. >/// But if they ever plan to hit you, use self-defense! >D!

Not all people in public schools are trashy and rude. Some of them are the nicest most social people you'll meet. You must get these generalizations from TV or something. Also I could say that all private school people are snobby and rude also.

Self-defense is an automatic 10 day suspension at my school. No questions asked. They view it as "fighting is fighting".

Pretty ludicrous in my opinion.

nymets: if u have a problem with skaters, then i think ur the racist one here cuz i skate and i dont consider myself to be trashy...

haven't you taken your situation to the administratin? or are you afraid of reprisal as a result?

it feels so deflating for me when you can't fight back. it's like giving up. you can tell yourself you'll be better than them later in life but there's no denying it still feels like crap.

i have the same situation, we have more than our share of gangs, drug dealers, and students with criminal records but we live in the states wealthiest community. it is indeed strange...maybe it's because many of the wealthier families have been sending their kids to the area's private schools...

I go to public school and it is full of people that they they are hard. I also just found out that there is such a large number of drug dealers at my school, they had to make a list to keep track of them. Visirale, you did the right thing by just ignoring them.

catholic schools are not necessarily better than public schools. i used to go to a catholic private school and my brothers admitted that the public school we go to know is far superior. there arent any gangs here anyway. to tell the truth, the ppl at my school are pretty nice. there arent drugs or anything.

I go to a public school and while I hate it at times, I don't think it's right to classify public school kids as "trashy and rude". While I admit that sums up some of the kids at our school, there are many students who are genuinely nice.

Yeah, for the most part, I hate private school kids. They are snobby, spoiled brats who think they are above everyone else.

These are all just opinions. I mean you really can't support the statement "most public school kids suck." If you can I'd be quite eager to see how. (The only way you would basically be able to prove your point would be to tell me that you've spoken to millions of public school children from across the 50 states and noticed a trend of "sucky" kids.)

Yeah, you kind of just proved my point with the "most public school kids suck" statement. But hey, as long as you're happy living on that imaginary pedestal you've propped yourself up on, who am I to tell you what to think?

And I really don't believe what I said. It was just to show how crass and misguided your initial statement was.

Heh, as my english teacher would say, "What's the direct object of suck?"

For that study, put those principles learned from AP Stat to use.

Your null hypothesis will be "All Public School kids suck." Then, using a one sided Z test at a 95% confidence level you will reject the null hypothesis.

We're all pretty bad seeds. All 45 million of us public schoolers..sketchy.

lol @ dvl

That would be interesting to carry out.
