Reasons not to attend UVA

regarding snobbiness:

I can appear like an a-hole sometimes, but deep down i'm a nice person. Don't let the snobby appearance fool you. My friends think I talk/look/laugh like a douchebag. I don't think I'm a douchebag at all.

regarding food:

the food IS NOT TERRIBLE. the dining hall food is not very good for sure. but that's just the first year! you should NOT get meal plan after the first year. Meal plans charge you 7.5 dollars for lunch, and 8.5 dollars for dinner. You can spend that money to get much better food on the corner.

7.5 dollars: You can get a cleo salad from Bodo's along with a tasty shrimp salad sesame bago from Bodo's, you can get butter chicken curry from just curry, you can get the lunch special from Lemongrass(Thai), you can get gyro with fries from college inn, you can get sushi from the Pav. Lunch specials at Asian express/panda garden cost less than 5 bucks.

8.5 dollars can get you an even bigger variety of stuff for dinner.

Spend your money wisely, and don't give your money to UVA dining hall.

regarding preppiness:

uva is pseudo-preppy at best. Relatively few new english prep school kids. it's mostly sheepish northern virginia kids who are obsessed with logos.

thats good news. sucks for meal plans though.

i agree with untitled with the idea that alot of the snobiness is unintended, and just comes across that way.....

And the students are not preppy compared to places like Brown, Yale, Princeton etc.., however they will come across as preppy for a state school.

Brown is preppy? Really?

The fake kind of american eagle/aeropostle preppy?

Hmm, these days it looks like UVA students are obsessed with wearing THE NORTH FACE apparel.

Wolfpack12, no, I don't think Untilted was referring to clothing labels - though I believe UVa is more Ralph Lauren/A&F than AE/Aeropostale. UVa is more diverse these days instead of the majority of the kids coming from prep and boarding schools which was more prevalent back when UVa was all-male before 1970. Back then, UVa was like the Southern version of Yale and Princeton.

Whenever I go to UVA I do see a lot of Ralph Lauren Polo and North Face. That's pretty much all everyone wore in my High School, so I don't find it preppy it all, it's just normal.

If UVa becomes a private university, it would definitely attractive more boarding school kids.

i don't think aceit could have said it better. Every single person I see is wearing a freaking The North Face jacket and it drives me crazy.

Ever think that maybe those jackets are extremely warm and well-built? I got one because there's a North Face store in Tyson's which is the only reason it won over Columbia and LL Bean's jackets were more expensive and not as nice looking. I happen to love that jacket and I can wear it in anywhere from cold to mild weather and be fine. Sure, it's probably popularized, which causes people to buy them, but once you do get one you grow to love it and wear it extensively.

Also, I think judging a college as "preppy" or "snobbish" because of the clothing worn is slightly high school-ish. Who cares what people wear, most college students would probably go naked if they could. People just want to look like they take care of themselves, but plenty of people wear t-shirts and jeans, or sweats, or leggings, or UVA athletic wear all the time. You're going to see this at any college really, UVA isn't alone.

UVA doesn't have to do a darn thing! they are just fine the way they are, and have been since TJ( the man, not the high school!) i guess because we're OOS it's not at all considered a "STATE" school in these parts. when i read the posts and often the criticisms of UVA are accompanied by."....for a STATE school...." ie, cost, clothes, etc. well, to most of the country, UVA IS an ivy! i've said this many times...my d chose it over SNOBBY ivies. it's a ivy, and of warm, sunny climate, and much more down-to-earth. y'all who go to UVA in-state are extremely fortunate, and i hope you know it! HYP...blahblah have nothing on UVA! as far as TJ the high school goes....it empties out into UVA. sure, some do the ivy thing, but many(most?) go to UVA. (safety my, a__)that's a major complaint of in-staters who GO to TJHS. since acceptances to UVA MUST come from a geographically diverse pool IN VA, all the very qualified who want to go to UVA from TJ can't. it's a big bone of contention. so as a northeasterner....i say if you want to see pretentious and snobby and preppy....GO WAY NORTH! hug the eastern coastline and you'll find 'em!
so that's my Easter message!:)

i, for one, think north face jackets look ugly. i am sure it's very warm though. i like girls in pastel colored cable knit sweaters.

I own two Northface jackets. One is really stylish I think. I get compliments on it every time I wear it. The other is the generic big black puffy jacket. I can safely say it's the warmest jacket I've ever had. I like Northface because the fabric technology they use is better than other brands. I' had had a Columbia jacket previously.

I don't own a jacket. I just wear hoodies.

Okay FINALLY something I think I can add to this discussion...fashion!

I have visited UVA twice and I absolutely loved the tours across the lawn, reading the chalk messages, and the amazing library ( I cannot remember the name but it was HUGE). While attentive towards the campus and the tour guide's speech, I couldn't help but look at the students passing by and of course noticing their clothes! Some could call me superficial but I like to look at what people are wearing, not judging them, but just am interested in different styles.

Mind you, I did not really notice what the guys were wearing so bare with me. When I was there I saw a lot of pearls, jeans, trouser pants, cable knit sweaters, and cardigans. I assumed these to be the girls comfortably dressed for lunch or class. I saw many girls in regular sweat pants, VIRGINIA shirts, ipods, jogging and possibly going to the gym or just studying. There were skinny jeans and gold pumps (which looked very painful to walk in but that girl was doing an amazing job!) her and her friends were very stylish, kind of like cut outs from Vouge. I did see the generic black North Face coat but one girl had this really nice yellow one...oh and there was a girl wearing a dress with leggings.

Basically what I am getting at...I saw many different types of styles at UVA. It was a tad preppy-dominated but I associate this with it being the most comfortable and easy style. Jeans, sweater, and pearls can take you to class, to lunch, out with friends, at club meetings, chilling in your dorm...wherever. I like to think of UVA (or any large school for that matter) as a mini excerpt of the world. There were many different types of styles, sporty, run-way, preppy, comfortable, simple, eccentric...any student is bound to find their niche I believe!

god I apologize for the large post...I haven't really posted here in awhile!

Happycollegemom, I love your Easter Message!! Sounds like your daughter has had a wonderful experience with UVA, that you have embraced as well. Your positive messages and input are inspiring; keep them coming! Yes, I have a North Face, but as Shoebox writes, they are great jackets, and I find they dress up quite nicely with a string of pearls.

I agree with theonenonlynat. My mom and I have a test for when we visit a college. To check if the school is "diverse enough" (more personalities wise, not nationalities) we always look for someone with a mohawk and we did see one at UVa. Granted it's not VCU, but there were no mohawks at JMU.

this thread is getting ridiculous. I liked the OP topic, as applicants we ussually hear all the good things about a school, but no school is perfect and some negative that one person may consider tolerable others may not. So it would really help if serious issues were discussed. I love UVA and know it is a great school, but i am sure it has its faults.
