Reasons to self-study senior year?

I was thinking of self-studying an AP or two during senior year, but then I was wondering what the point would be (other than to enlighten myself, of course).

Would the only point be to get the credit for college? I mean, there's no way that colleges would know you're self-studying, correct?

The only reason you would self-study a class rather than take the AP class would be if your school didn't offer the class, or your schedule is already full and you want to take a lot of APs. I don't think anyone chooses to self-study if they can take a class at their school.

I self-studied for the Spanish Language exam this year because my school system doesn't offer the course. I basically did it because I wanted to see if I could pass it without the course or any AP teacher. And I got a 4! =) Plus my school paid for it...so....what did I have to lose?

I feel validated in the fact that I'm the only person ever in my school system to have taken the AP Spanish Language exam, and that I got a 4 without an AP course or teacher. AND I'm certainly not a native speaker.

Yes, that would for the most part "be the point." I'm self studying 2 APs next year (also senior) mainly because I have some interest in the subjects (APES and Econ) and would like to get rid of pesky core requirements/take higher science courses in college.

is there any way for colleges to know that you are self studying senior year??? like any spot on the application? i know on the common app, for the 9 ap slots they provide, it says Date Taken/ To Be Taken. would you put it there and just circle "to be taken"??

umm...I specifically mentioned my passion for spanish in one of my college essays, stating that because of my intense interest I self-studied. =) Otherwise isn't there an "additional information" section of the common app? I suppose you could put it there if you felt strongly about it.

Hey when I was filling out my application online, I started to put the APs I'm gonna take my senior year, but then it wouldn't let me change pages because it said that I had to put a grade for the AP exams...but I haven't taken them yet...idk
