Reasons why one receieve mailing from a university

I have been receiving mailing from serveral univesities, all which I see myself as a potential student. Though I was wondering what are factors of one receiving mail from universities, knowing they have not sign on their mailing list, nor a site where you voluntery ask for mailing from any university.
Main universities:
University of Minnesota- Twin Cities
Calvin College
Florida State University

What are reasons for one to receive mailing from universities under those conditions?

I know just because you get mail from these universities often, do not mean they want you as a student, though in some cases it may.

(this is part of my college search)

Thanks…

This is puzzling to me as well. We have made it very known that we are interested in a particular university, even going so far as to visit it on a summer vacation, even though it’s many miles away, yet they never send my son any mail. We’re beginning to wonder if they want him or not. He’s a good student and in their stat range, as well as very involved in school. Wonder if they don’t want to waste the postage on him, since they figure he’s a shoe-in.

On the other hand, there are schools that we’ve never responded to, yet they continue to bombard us with mail. Some of them even call constantly. My favorite is a small school in Texas, a state my son abhors, yet they have very sweet sounding young ladies call, so he feels obligated to answer their call and talk to them. You should see the smile on his face while he talks to them.

I’m also in question about this issue. If I’m receiving mail by these universities due to their interest, then I also would like to show interest back and see if there is potential of me applying. Though if it’s just what many may call spam, then it gives second suggestions. I have also showed interest in several universities, and did not receieve any mail of interest back etc…

Thanks for replies, looking for more responds on my original post.

Are you a sophomore or junior who took the PSAT last year and put “yes” for student search option? It could be the reason you are getting mails from certain colleges, because some of them use these standard test scores to find prospective students. However, getting those mails does not necessarily indicate that you will be accepted into a college, and from my experience, some colleges rarely send out any stuff to any student, so not getting them it’s not a big deal. If you are really interested in a school, just make sure you join their mailing list online.

^^he’s right. if you took any test psat or pact colleges buy your name from those places and put you on an automatic mailing list. then they send stuff at random. you can add your name to a colleges mailing list as well.

These questions sound rather naive. Why do you receive any mailing from any company? Because they bought your name off a mailing list based on characteristics which made them think that you might be interested in them. I don’t understand why this is any more puzzling than why you receive mailings from tire companies, restaurants, credit card companies, car dealerships, etc.? Someone clue me in as to why this isn’t obvious.

Pizzagirl, I get what your saying, but my son gets NO mail from tire companies, etc. So it seems reasonable for him to ask what list they got his name from.

it’s possible your son’s scores didn’t get on the college’s radar. even if they were high he competing against many other kids and selective schools only take the nth percentile for the automatic mailing list. sometimes they just miss you. i know i never got any mail from princeton until i asked for it. the mail will come though i have a trashbag full i haven’t shreaded yet.

I’m actually class of 2010, and will be going into my last year of high school ( senior ). I have not taken the psat either.

Thoughts?

Also universities that I have not receieved mail from, which I have interest in… I know others who have gotten mail from the university.

I have signed up for a few schools mailing list ( well one to three) and have not gotten any mail.

Pizzagirl, my question is not naive… and a post like yours is not welcome.

They’re getting your name from somewhere and it’s usually the collegeboard. have you taken any test at all? chances are some colleges knows you exist. the mailing season doesn’t start until late july early august. if you’re not getting mail it just means ur score didn’t hit their radar, it doesn’t mean you won’t get in. there is also the possibily that colleges get thousands of requests and it takes a while to process things

Yeah, I don’t recall selling my name to any company. Also, as I mention in my first post… I know receiving mail from these universities does not mean they want me as a student, but I’m curious what are the factors.

They can get the information from the schools themselves, or from the tests (AP/PSAT/SAT) that the student takes. Usually they will not call you unless you have filled out an information slip (such as at a college fair) or website expressing interest.

Well actually I think I got my first mailing from UM-Twin Cities late 10th grade, or early 11th grade. I started to receive mail every since, while Florida State University and Calvin College started my 11th grade year.

Responding to bananasandwich15’s earlier comment about college mails not coming 'till july or august: Actually, they came out a lot earlier this year. In fact, Coolbrezze, if you still haven’t heard from the colleges you’re interested in, either they do not send out mail at all or you are not on their mailing list. Joining a few extra mailing list will show the colleges that you’re interested in them, which may help later on. Keep trying.

@bananasandwich15: by the way, I’m a girl. Maybe I should consider changing my screen name.

I don’t understand why I would have to apply to ones mailing list more than once. I’ll try applying to other schools mailing list, and see what I receieve. Though schools that I did receieve mailing from I’m interested in all, and with their mailing my interest increase… and again yes I know just because I receieve mail does not mean they want me as a student.

^

I actually thought it would be negative to apply to a schools mailing list more than once since they already have your information, and with that… you either will get mail or you won’t.

I get mail from schools because I took the SAT as a freshman and checked that “please spam me” box. I also did the PLAN test this year and again checked the box.

There are a few where I actually requested information.

If you’re this worried about the mailing thing, ask someone at your school whether they’ve received mail from the college, so you know if they send anything at all. Or search for that college on CC and you may find better answers. I know that Florida State definitely send out stuff because I vaguely remember getting mail from them some time ago.

As for your last comment about “you either get mail or you won’t”, I just want to point out getting mail from a college is not some sort of privilege that you have to apply for like you apply for admission. Any student can ask for information and get it, and colleges don’t deny mailing to anyone based on whether or not he or she is a good match. In fact, how can they even judge you when they hardly even know you:)
