Reasons Why You Picked LMU

Hi, this is going to be a long and personal post, but please try to read and help me out!

I live in Seattle, and my college pick came down to Seattle U. and LMU. After visits and research I am completely leaning towards LMU, but the problem is my parents. After grants merits etc, I would be paying 11k more per year to LMU. Since these schools academically dont have a very broad difference, they dont see why they would give the extra money, but they arent close minded to the idea of convincing them somehow. Of course I have my own reasons I will present to them, but I would also really appreciate anyone that could give me and good reasons/statistics or selling points for LMU. We are financially very comfortable, and the 11k would not really do any damage.

Any help would be amazing!
Thanks

They really are two very different campuses, I’m afraid. You cannot go wrong with either, but I’ll share anecdotal information which you are free to take with a grain of salt.

One of my friends’ daughters attended SU and could not wait to transfer out. In fact, she disliked it so much, she did study abroad the second semester of her sophomore year just to get away. She transferred to UW Madison and graduates this spring! Great fit for her. Bear in mind this is one student’s experience, but she really disliked SU.

Now for LMU. You can look up my posts here on CC and you’ll learn my son’s story–a freshman last year at Boston College. Loved BC. Came home to LA and enrolled for summer session at LMU–two film classes. Professor says to DS, “So remind me why you’re at BC if you’re a film guy?” He was so impressed with his amazing professors for his two courses. My son initiated a transfer, was accepted, and is now completing his sophomore year at LMU as a production major in the School of Film and Television. He says it is the best decision he ever made to leave BC.

DS loves it so much, he invited his little sister, DD, to visit in January for the day. DD had been accepted EA in December to SFTV Animation program. DD was bowled over with the facilities, the internship opportunities, and the resumes of LMU graduates who were employed gainfully in the industry. (She discovered that herself by doing a search on LinkedIn. Clever girl!) Yesterday, she went to campus again, met with the chair of the animation program and spent a lot of hours last night weighing her various options, which were significant and several. Tonight, she officially accepted her offer for LMU!

As a parent, I have been amazed at the personal attention and professionalism of everyone on campus–faculty, staff, administration. You also get to live in Southern CA, which is a huge draw for most students.

My recommendation, since money is not the issue, is to visit the campuses for their accepted student weekends and get ALL of your questions answered. PM me if you’d like to talk to either of my LMU Lions!

Hi! Thanks for the detailed post.
My best friend has been going to SU this year, and he dislikes it. I visit him often, and the only person I was able to relate and form a good friendship with there could not take SU anymore and transferred out halfway through the year back to Cali. I have been to SU 20+ time to visit my friend (including sneaking into some classes) and I know it is not the right school for me. I am going to the LMU Preview Day this Sunday, and I am hoping the location and campus will help me convince my parents that LMU would be worth the extra 11k. I just need to help them see past the money!
Again, thank you for all the information.

So glad you’re visiting for Preview Day. Please have your parents PM me if they want more information about LMU. I cannot imagine them insisting on your attending a university where all the people you know have had a bad experience. Unfortunately, my daughter who just accepted her offer of admission to LMU (!) cannot attend on Sunday, but any of us would be happy to speak to your folks or you! Enjoy the day and keep me posted!
