Thoughts on DECA?

How does the DECA International Career Development Conference factor into this? What about Model United Nations? Varsity Sports? Starting your own club (rating based on club attendance, possibly)?

Where do you guys think a perfect SAT/ACT score would be on the list?

^ I think likely a 4 looking at some of the other awards.

Do middle school accomplishments count like FIRST Lego robotics and what not?

Eh, what grade was it? If it was less than 8th it’s iffy. FIRST Lego Robotics won’t do much, lots of people do it in middle school. I’d say not to mention it but its your choice

Someone who has been working on this/is qualified to answer:

I believe NJCL Certamen Advanced winning team should be added on to the same NAQT/Science Bowl winner. There are less competitors, but the difficulty of questions and depth of knowledge required to win the Advaced championship is extremely high.

Similarly, NJCL Certamen/Harvard Certamen MVP should be added on. I’d like to say NJCL MVP should be placed at an 8/7 (only 1 in the country, but not a 9/10 due to less participants) and Harvard at a 7/6.

NJCL Exam High Scorer should definitely be higher than a 5. Just to clarify: getting a 1st place is not the same as getting a high score - the high score winner has the “high score” of the 6 first place winners. This is definitely far more difficult than NLE perfect paper, which many students (I think in the 100s) get in the country each year. However, for the competitive NJCL exams like Derivatives, Vocabulary, Advanced Grammar, Roman History, Mythology, and Latin Literature, I think a high score is far more prestigious, perhaps enough to be an 8.

What do you guys say? I want to make sure this makes sense before I update :)

Requests for a few other awards to be ranked:

NCWIT National Winner/National Runner Up/State Winner

Final call on Jeopardy/Quiz TV Show appearance?

Medusa Mythology Exam Gold Medal

PACE Quiz Bowl

Technovation Challenge Winner (I’d think this one would be similar to FIRST Robotics or whatever the high school equivalent is)

Some state level math award like this: [Massachusetts Association of Mathematics Leagues](http://www.maml.org/v9/public_view_qualifiyers_2012_2013/index.php)

NCTE national writing award?

They have about 270 winners a year
Each school selects a limited number of entrants based on the size of the school

Those entrants are then judged at a national level

Is there a criteria for measuring the prestigiousness of a competition? Is it based on the number of people who participate and the percent of people who qualify for an award? Is it based on whether the topic is hard?

I think there should be some changes. For one, Science Bowl, NAQT, and Ocean Sciences Bowl National Winner should be shifted down to 5.5-6. I don’t know if being a “winner” also includes being top 5 but I’ll just assume it does. Although winning nationals is a worthy achievement, there are many things that I personally think keep it from being a 7. For one, the competition process can result in many good teams being blocked off from qualifying for nationals. Since Science Bowl and Ocean Sciences Bowl (idk about NAQT) only allow the first place winner to qualify for nationals, many second place team who lost by only a couple of points and thus are unable to participate for nationals may not be able to show their potential. Some regions have extremely competitive teams while others are pretty easy to qualify for nationals. Second, none of them is an actual “science”. They all involve memorizing random facts, especially NAQT, in which most are of the high school level. They don’t actually have challenging and in depth questions like the Olympiads, which have college level questions. Anyone agree with me?

collegedad, we actually won their superior ranking for our most recent literary-art magazine, but I didn’t submit this to colleges since I heard the news after deadlines and didn’t know about updating colleges (d’oh). But as an editor-in-chief who’s worked extensively on the magazine and who’s familiar with our statewide “competition,” as well as someone who’s won a couple of 5/6ish-level awards on here…hmmm…I’d call it at a 4 or 5.

Have you heard of the Columbia Scholastic Press Awards? We got a gold crown in that as well, and I assume its prestige is up with the NCTE’s, if your kids are interested. (I got the vibe they were into creative writing?)

@randomazn14

Thanks for he info and also about the Columbia press award

My DS is actually focused more on stem than on writing

^Sure! Though I think that’s what makes participating in writing so much fun. It’s different from STEM activities (I did FRC competitions, AMC testing, lab research, etc.), but so many things boil down to writing=necessary (though not always most necessary, maybe).

And collegedad, your kid is lucky to have his/her dad. I would’ve been happy to discover lots of these fabulous STEM-related opportunities (Intel, RSI, etc.) earlier than late junior year. Not saying I’d have a shot at any of them, but hey. Basically, you go, dude!

Sorry if this has been asked, but where would Girls/Boys State go? I’m guessing 4 since it’s state-level. What about if you won an award or one of the top positions?

Hey guys should I do both FBLA (state) and Science Olympiad Nationals or should I just focus on Science Olympiad nationals (and placing there)? If I do well in FBLA I could make nationals also. Thanks

I’m surprised by the absence of quizbowl awards on this list. Qualifying for HSCNT or PACE NSC should be a 5 or so, getting to playoffs a 7, placing top four an 8, and winning a 9.

Where do you think attending Boy’s State summer program for your state would fall?

how would you guys rank USAJMO in comparison to USAMO?
