I have a close friend whose first choice is Dartmouth, and she has asked me to write her a recommendation as a friend (I'm sure people in this forum are familiar with the recommendation in question). I'm really glad she asked me, and I think she's fantastic and well deserving of admission to the school, so I'm afraid of screwing it up!

I'm not a teacher or a guidance counselor, so I don't feel like saying "I recommend her strongly" will mean much unless I talk about what kind of person she is with her friends, and recommend her in terms of that. They can see her academics elsewhere in the application. I would like to talk candidly about how competitive and driven my friend is, with personal examples- more informal (but obviously still polished and well written)- but I don't know if I'm supposed to have a more professional approach.

So my question to you Dartmouth lovers and experts is what would you want your friend to write about you? What do you think they are looking for, something professional, or more informal?

I would want my friend to write as personal as possible about me..My traits and examples where I demonstrate them:)..I mean colleges want to hear examples rather than just generalization anyway..

get ur friend to write something about you that you dont really address so much on your commonapp or ur essay.
maybe some kind of hobby or something youve done together or that he/she has seen u you and appreciates

they can then tell colleges something special about you that makes you unique and tell colleges about your personality and traits as well

your friend's writing and personality in writing the rec also reflects on you as well, since colleges will associate your peers with you

It's great you can do this for your friend ... I would recommend describing things about her that will make the Dartmouth community better. How will interact with her peers and the commnity and make it a better place ... that will help make her much more than a set of numbers on an application page.
