My daughter's AP art teacher has been extremely helpful to her in putting together her portfolio. Yesterday he told her he had already written a rec. letter to go with it.
Her AP bio and AP history teachers from 11th grade already sent their letters. Should she send along the Art teachers letter with the portfolio?
Is 3 letters, if the app. states 2 are required, pushing it?

Crewmom: Definitely send it, even if the app states only 2 are required. Many colleges allow supplemental materials. And since your D is applying as an art major, all the more reason to have a rec from an art teacher! Great that the teacher volunteered the rec.

Crewmom, if she's applying as an art major, definitely send the art teacher's recommendation. My daughter will probably be applying as an art minor - in any case, her art teacher is probably the teacher who knows her best - she will have had her for three years before she graduates and has worked with her on extracurricular projects and independent study projects as well. I think my daughter will probably use her as a supplementary recommendation where ever possible.

CrewMom, My son put together an arts package which consisted of slides of his work, his arts resume and a recommendation from his IB art teacher. This letter was in addition to the two academic recommendations required by the college. The arts resume included a personal statement about his artwork, his interests and background, a list of his art classes, grades, scores, activities and awards and achievements. If I remember correctly this package was stipulated by Amherst. Son did not actually end up applying to Amherst, but he liked the idea of putting together a package focusing on his passion. My understanding was that the package was evaluated by the art department separately from the rest of the application. Since the art professors would presumably speak the same "language" as the art teacher I think an arts related recommendation is a positive.

Momrath, Wow, I LOVE the idea of putting the art teacher rec together with the art portfolio package. Makes perfect sense! My daughter is planning on putting together a set of slides of her art, even though she is probably not going to end up as an art major and most of the schools she is applying to do not require it --- this would be a great place for the art teacher recommendation to go as well. Thanks for the idea!
