For the one rec letter that has to be written by a science professor, can it be from a professor in any science course (ie. say an analytical chemistry course or life science bio course) or does it have to be from a professor in the core biology, chemistry, orgo, and physics classes?

Also would it be seen as a negative thing if I'm taking a lot of poli sci classes and econ classes as a pre-med?

1.) Probably either way is fine, but letters are determined by your UNDERGRADUATE school if they have a committee (Northwestern probably does). So they’re the final authority.

my understanding (at least in my undergrad) is that if the course is included in your science GPA, it would be appropriate for a science prof rec

I think what BDM meant was that if your undergrad has a premed committee, they’re the ones that dictate the exact combination of LOR’s that you’ll need (1 science/1 nonscience, 2 science, 2 science/1 nonscience, whatever).

For example, my school’s premed committee has no requirements, just that you provide them with 2-3 LOR’s from any source (supervisor, volunteer director, science professor, nonscience professor, etc.). The premed committee then provides me with a letter that allows me to bypass any med school’s LOR requirements. The fact Michigan wants 2 LOR’s from science professors is irrelevant to me because my committee LOR will be accepted in lieu of those required LOR’s.
