Rec Letter Question

I'm applying to Duke ED. I've sent in the two required recs on the common app, and got the supplemental from a guy at my church. I was really wanting to send in an extra one from another teacher of mine. Would this hurt my chances. They only require the two with the one supplemental.

It won't hurt your chances, but most likely they will only consider two.

my counselor said that if they only ask for 2, they only want 2. They read tons of these, so if they have extras they will just throw them out

No, they will not throw them out. They will read everything in the file. (But, if it's too much material, say, 5+ recs, a reader may wonder why you did not follow directions.)

Alay: a supplemental rec can help if it provides additional information that two teachers' and a GC recs do not. If you are active and a leader in your church, then a supplemental from that org might help, just as a supplemental rec from an employer could add additional information to your file. But, if the supplemental will not add additional info, it should not be submitted.

sorry, I might need to clarify. The supplemental rec from my church guy was asked for in their supplement. I wanted to send an extra teacher rec, in addition to the two on common app.

Unless the third teacher has something significant to add that the other two teachers (or GC) cannot discuss, then do no send.

I think that she adds some good information. She's also teaches biology, which I plan to major in. Will this really hurt my chances? I can understand them not giving it the same credence as the others, but will they be descriminatory because of it?

anybody....

I'm sure they would read it if you sent it in with the others, but I don't think it's a great idea because they will probably focus less on the other two letters. I think it's quality over quantity in this instance, and unless the letter is something truly fantastic and has something the other two lack completely, I'd say forget it.

I think that the supplemental one is as good if not better than the others. I don't quality will be a problem in this case, I'm just worried about peeving the readers.
