I know private schools consider them, but how big of a deal is it not to send them? I dont want to ask teachers to write 5 rec letters...maybe just 2 for my top 2 schools.

no.
why cant a teacher just write one and make a copy, where are you applying to?
a generic app works anywhere. I don't know of many that require special recs.

UCs do not want, nor will they even consider, rec letters.

Many privates require them, not just consider them. You must send them if they're required (you won't be considered until the application is complete).

And don't worry about them having to do 5 letters. Rec letters ask the same things for the most part, so you give the teacher with the recs (and all the info they'll need), and they'll fill them all out with the overlapping info (instead of filling each one out individually).

They have a generic rec, from what I saw each school has their own one! I know all the common app ones are the same, but will the schools that dont use the common app accept recs from the common app?

Yes. Schools that don't take the Common App will accept the Common App's recommendation form. They're not looking to make more work for overburdened high school teachers.
