Hi! I remember reading (and have heard people say) that Chicago requires one rec letter from a math/science teacher and one from a humanities-type teacher, but today, when I checked the website and looked through the mail I'd gotten from them, I couldn't find that requirement anywhere. Can anyone point me to an official statement that the recommendations must come from two different types of teachers, one science and one humanities? Or am I just confused? :)

[By the way, congrats to early applicants--even the ones who were deferred or rejected. I was deferred by one of my top choices today as well, so I know how you feel, and I think that we're better off at least knowing that we should invest our energy elsewhere. Personally, I've come to realize recently that there are schools (like Chicago) that I probably like as much as my first choice, and deferral is giving me the impetus to apply.]

They actually changed their requirement sometime in October. The old requirement was one math/science, one humanities. The new requirement is two “academic subjects”, by which they seem to mean not low-level foreign language and not studio art or music, and probably not some other things some high schools may offer. If you have a legitimate question about whether a teacher qualifies, you should probably contact your regional rep . . . although time is getting pretty short.

JHS is correct and the change from two different categories caught a lot of people by surprise (my kid included). If you have a teacher in a non-academic subject who would be offer a different perpective on you, feel free to get that rec for Chicago. They will accept supplemental recs – both my kids did this. Just be sure you have the two academic recs, too.

Yep, they changed it the DAY before I went to ask my teachers for recs, so I emailed them and they said just the two academic teachers who know you best. So I did my AP physics teacher, Latin (I’m in Latin 6), and a supplemental one from my gifted education teacher/guidance counselor person.

thanks for all of the replies (: i would really prefer to ask my spanish lit teacher (who’s already written a rec for me) over my physics teacher (who i barely know), so it’s really helpful to know for sure!
