So my situation is that I used my AP scores and got out of general chemistry (probably shouldn't have done this - didn't know at the time).

Because I have to take 1 year's worth of general chemistry for med school for a grade (can't use the AP credit), I was wondering if med schools would recalculate my GPA to include this 1 year of general chemistry despite me getting no credit.
In other words, I want to know if med schools use my university's GPA (doesn't include gen chem because I get no credit) or if they recalculate my GPA to include gen chem for credit (as well as all other courses that I get no credit for but am forced to take)

Well I do know that schools look at both the AMCAS/PharmCAS GPAs as well as their own calculated gpas and that the AMCAS/PharmCAS GPAs include courses w/o credit.

What I was curious about was if schools calculated their own gpas to include grades in courses that you did not get credit for in college (because they were repeated).
I want my hard work in these courses that I have to repeat to reflect in the GPA that my grad schools will ultimately see.

Your situation is very confusing. Do you mean that you will take general chemistry and receive a grade, but your university will provide 0 credits for it?

In that case, (1) AMCAS would list it on your transcript but would probably not weight the course, and (2) medical schools would probably not count this as satisfying their general chemistry requirements.

OR do you mean that you will receive credit, but you will have to forfeit AP credit, so your NET credits will be 0? In THAT case, AMCAS will certainly count your grade. (And medical schools will accept it.)

For AP Chemistry, I got 8 units of credit; however, there are 12 units worth of general chemistry classes I would have been able to take had I not used my AP test-score.
So because I already got credit for the 3-course series of general chemistry, I get 0 additional units for retaking the 3 courses (that means it is not factored into my college’s GPA at all). I’m left 4 units short of what I would have gotten had I opted out of AP credits.

I would just use my AP credits and not take general chemistry for a grade but that would disqualify me from a majority of schools

If the class does not appear on your college transcript with a grade (which it sounds like it doesn’t), it won’t affect your AMCAS GPA.

This is how most colleges deal with AP credit so your situation is not unique. Only very very few colleges will actually count your AP classes into your college GPA. AMCAS certainly isn’t going to if your college doesn’t.

am i allowed to take something like physical chemistry in the place of general chemistry when the pre-requisite on the site says “1 year of general chemistry” and “1 year of organic chemistry”

I can’t imagine that any school works on a system as stupid as the one you describe. Assuming you’re describing it correctly, however, then yes, you can (and should) take p-chem.
