Recalculating GPA for transfer applications?

The other day I got rejected as a transfer applicant to Rutgers - NB (finance major). They told me that despite the fact I have a GPA of 3.76, they recalculated my GPA to be a 2.4!!!

Basically, I graduated high school in 2011, and in 2011/12 I screwed around and failed/dropped all my community college classes. Fast forward to 2015 when I re-enrolled after I had figured out what I wanted to do with my life. I re-took the exact same classes at the exact same college, and petitioned to have these grades removed from influencing my GPA. However, Rutgers decided they didn’t like that, and re-calculated my GPA and give me a significantly lower GPA. I’m honestly not even offended I was rejected. It’s a mildly selective institution. I’m offended that after years of working my a** off to fix all the mistakes I made, Rutgers decided that they still counted. Is this commonplace for transfer applications? I’m worried now that more selective institutions I applied to will do the same just so they can toss my application in the discard file and worry about other ones. I was rejected from TCNJ as well today and I emailed them to see if they do the same thing, because I want to know if it’s something I should be planning for.

I’m in the same boat as you, to my understanding most Universities will add up everything, You would think they would see the upward trend in GPA? Idk man it sucks but GL, your best bet is it look at any of these school’s appeal policies and go from there.

By the way did those classes retook stay on your transfer application?

They saw my upward trend but according to them it was an upward trend from a freaking 1.1 to 2.4 if they include the old grades.

What do you mean did they stay on my app?

Dude… it sucks I know exactly how it feels, you would think they would be like, "okay, this guy has shown that he has grown and matured, and can handle college now " Just seems like common sense to me lol. If anything I would think a little bit of adversity and over coming it would show some strength.

Oops, I meant your grades on your transcript. The classes that I failed and retook my CC automatically calculated the grade out of my GPA but you can still see the F’s on there. So some of the schools I applied to are going to see them and still calculate it even though it has an ‘E’ next to it for exempt. You were saying you actually petitioned your grades to where they weren’t visible on your transcript? If so then I need to do that asap.

No they’re still visible. What happened was I had to petition to have the new grades replace the old grades. So the transcript from my college still shows the failed classes, but they don’t count as a part of the gpa

So when I did the common app I only used the grades that counted in my gpa because that’s the way my CC saw it. But not some of the places I applied to

I’m guessing the petition was just for your CC’s GPA. Most universities seem to use cumulative GPA in admissions, though it seems private schools have more leeway with this. I’m in a similar situation and most of the colleges I applied to used my cumulative GPA (which is 2.9-3.0), but one of the private schools I applied to used my most recent grades (3.9) and gave me a great merit scholarship. Weird stuff.

I mean, for my situation it’s not so much “recent” grades. I had to retake the exact same classes and petition to have the new As/Bs replace the old Ds/Fs.
