I know how a lot of times, colleges will recalculate an applicant's GPA using their own grading scale. However, I recently realized how my high school just reports a letter grade on transcripts, not the actual number grade (e.g., 94) that the student received. So in cases like this, how do colleges handle it, since they don't have the numbers to recalculate?

Every college does it their own way, but generally:

A = 4.0
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3

etc.

The UC’s and Cal States in CA do not do it that way at all. They have their own system of A=4, B=3 etc but then they also give bonus points for up to 8 semesters of AP/Honors classes (the AP/Honors classes have to be approved by them for the extra point bump). Also some of them do not count 9th grade grades and they only count classes that qualify for A-G requirements.

Oh okay, I see. I always assumed they looked at the number grade, not the letter. Thanks!
