How many reccomendation letters would you reccomend I send to a college? Is 1 enough or should I ask for 2 or 3? I went to this governors school program and I was planning on asking a teacher and the director from there (both are college professors...idk if that matters)...and also one of my regular teachers in high school....should i not ask the governors school teachers who I;ve only known for a month? Or should I just ask a couple teachers in my school?

First you should find out how many letters each college wants, such as for any common app school they generally want two apps. As to asking a governors school staff, hmmm, I think that would be tough to send in, and I would recommend trying to get two junior/senior teachers of yours [as is recommended by the commonapp site, at least] so hmmm...

To reinforce Tonyt88's suggestion, yes, it depends on the college, but I think the norm is 2-3 Teacher recommendations max. in addition to the H.S. Guidance Counselor recommendation. Some colleges may want additional recommendations from a music teacher and/or an athletic coach with whom you may have had a long-term relationship. I would not ask a teacher from the governors school, given the short time you've had to form a meaningful relationship.

Incidentally, in the case of H.S. Guidance Counselor recommendations, be sure to provide a comprehensive "brag sheet" of who you are, your lists of honors, accomplishments, EC's, intended course of study in college, etc. More often than not, GC's for larger schools in particular do not know students well, so it behooves the student to offer this aid to the GC. Make certain that the "brag sheet" is formalized to the point where you would not be embarassed to have a copy made and sent to the school by the GC. This should be no more than about a 3-4 page summary at best.

if you want a certain teacher to write recommendations for multiple schools, how does it work? does he/she write the same recommendation and just change the name? or does he/she have to write all different ones?

Okay, well this is how it works at our school, the teachers just write one letter about you [they can put in some college names upon request, usually top choice] and then on all of the actual recommendations they just say "see attached" and they do all the checkboxes so it's not too bad on them. So, they don't have to write one for each one, though it depends on how your school does teacher recs.

There probably is no standard teacher recommendation process. At my daughter's school, she asked that teachers keep an electronic copy of the recommendation letter in case she needed another letter "customized" for a particular school/scholarship program. Copies of the teacher recommendations were also forwarded to the Counseling Dept., and the GC would send out as needed per each college that the student applied to.
