Do they always have to be from a teacher from 10th to 12th grade in a major academic subject? Can't you strech it a bit and ask a teacher from 9th grade that knows you extremely well?

Different colleges look at recommendations differently, so research the school(s) you are applying to. I think most colleges suggest the recommendation be from one of your 11/12th grade teachers, from a core class. But, if you have a close relationship with your music teacher (that you've known for four years), or art teacher, or something along those lines, and you are interested in pursuring that subject in college, it would be worth including.

i have a close relationship with a 9th gr teacher... i doubt i will find any other stronger. but schools want 11-12... ugh.

You could ask the 9th grade teacher to send in an additional recommendation letter. But you need to give the colleges what they ask for first.
