Received a D winter session, now for the letter...

I received a D in a college algebra class. Now I am working on a letter to the schools I applied (UCLA, Berkeley, UCSD) send them but I have a couple of questions.

Someone told me to write a full page- Should it really be a full page?

Someone else told me to NOT include an excuse. Is this a good idea?

Is it best to send it in the mail or email it?

Should I update the D online now, or wait until I email/or mail the letter?

Does anyone know of a website that will give me more information because I've looked everywhere and have searched the entire boards it seems... Thanks a lot everyone.

If you can, try to call the department and inform them… I think that would be a better idea? I’m not sure a letter will do any good unless you have an extremely good reason why you received a D. Emails are not always good due to the fact that you are not 100% guaranteed a response back. Also, if you are close by to any of the schools you listed, try to talk to them in person.

Although, I am not sure if you need to inform them yet because they have not asked for your grades.

thanks a lot dbguy4eva!

Would anyone be willing to read my letter? I think it sounds too whiny …

From another recent thread:

You should report the D as soon as possible. Everyone waits until the last minute to report the D and that creates a backlog that aggravates the admissions officers. Report it now and attach an explanation (well written, tragic and believable) and hope for the best.

Send a one page formal letter to each campus you applied to stating in which class you received a D and the reason for receiving the D. Include whatever identification information that is required by each campus (should be on their web sites). If you had a medical or family problem, describe in detail how that impacted your school schedule (e.g. extended absence). Otherwise state plainly what went wrong, avoid blaming others for your failure. Then keep your fingers crossed.

if you still need someone to look over your letter you can PM it to me if you want.

just take college algebra during spring.. (make up)
