Received Admissions Letter Today

My D just received her acceptance letter this morning.

Waitimg to hear from Smith, Cornell, Penn, Wellesley and other
LACs.

p2bhd, where do you guys live?

Congratulations!

We live in Pennsylvania.

The acceptance package was
sent by Priority Mail from Bryn Mawr.

Thank you! We in the hinterlands should expect something tomorrow but more likely Monday.

Proud2beherdad,

Did you receive the other accept/decline letters? Any decisions pending?

We've got a pending decision...small scholarship at Smith, larger scholarship and honors program at Northeastern U. Kind of like comparing a really small apple to a pretty large orange. My husband is leaning toward the money, I'm leaning toward the smaller college and all women. We're both having a hard time allowing this to be D's decision.

SmartGirlsMom .

D accepted @
Bryn Mawr
Penn State
Saint Joseph's University with $10000 merit award
Syracuse with $12,000 merit award

Waitlisted@
Smith (not interested anymore due to lesbian rape story)
Lafayette
Cornell

Rejected@
Wellesley
Penn
Colgate

Waiting to hear on financial aid package
from Saint Joe's.

Dollar wise, Penn State is the least expensive
@ $20,000/year. When we factor in the
other schools financial aid packages, Penn State
is $4000 to $9000 less then all of these
private schools. So, the question is.... Does D
go to the least expensive school or go to the
"Best Value School"?

D shall be @ accepted students days @ Bryn Mawr
on the 17th & 18th. She is favoring Bryn Mawr
@ this point in time, but would like to be accepted
from Cornell's wait list.

Im between Bryn Mawr, bucknell, and tcnj...tcnj is significantly cheaper..

Dad-what happenned at Smith?

Never mind, found out...whoa, that's bad news for Smith...

Jersey Girl - I was between Bryn Mawr and Bucknell as well! I was told, though, by Bucknell grads even, that Bryn Mawr is overall the better school.

proud2bherdad, it's a really big deal to stay overnight at Bryn Mawr -- more so than most other schools, because it is so small and so unique. If she's leaning that way, I think there's a very good argument to be made for staying an extra day or two after the admitted students event is over to get a feel for the usual campus atmosphere. (I attended from '95-'97.)

Hanna,

You are correctin stating there's a
very good argument to be made for
staying an extra day or two after
the admitted students event is over
to get a feel for the usual campus
atmosphere. Unfortunately, her
schedule does not permit it. She is
missing softball practice on Monday
the 18th resulting in her not being
able to play in Tuesday's game.
She is very competitive and hates
it when she has to sit out a game.
BTW, this is her 5th visit to Bryn Mawr.

I'd imagine that in 5 visits, she's had a full opportunity to look around! :)

Hate to tell you, but the prospective students weekend is not what Bryn Mawr's really like. It's a lot cooler than the way they present it during the weekend, which is this place that's "like, reeeeeealllly, reaaaalllly fun." Ugh.

Mainly the reason it sucks so much is that you're surrounded by a bunch of girls who aren't coming and are whining about not getting a first kiss/date until they're 26 if they come to this school (frankly, IMHO, with that attitude, they won't get it no matter what school they go to). The other camp you're surrounded by is militant Bryn Mawr diehards who scream about how fabulous it is. If you're on the fence, it can freak you out.

Definitely trust your instinct about the school and don't let the spec weekend change your impression. A bunch of my friends and I all got freaked out by the spec weekend 2 years ago. We now love Bryn Mawr.

But on the bright side, you'll see the gorgeousness of BMC in spring, cherry blossoms and all. Sigh. It's completely gorgeous.
