WHAT THE HECK!

Whyyyyy? I don't get it. They just sent me a random e-mail saying I don't qualify for Cal Grant Entitlement Awards.
Last year I as at CC and received cal grant awards and pell grant.
Now, I am planning on transferring and I don't qualify for Cal grants or Pell grants.

Like seriously, how the hell am I supposed to pay for school? Our system is whacked!

Did your financial situation change? Were your grades low? Did you go to school for too many semesters? If not, then maybe there’s been a mistake???

no way, 3.7 gpa.
I’ve been at cc for 3 years (this being my third)

if there is a mistake is it possible to call and have them change it, or is it too late?

How many credits do you have if you have been at a two yr college for three years?

You can be disqualified if family income is over 80k. What was your family income?

I’ve been at cc for 3 years (this being my third)

Is there a number of years limit for Cal Grants at a CC???

Has your parents’ income gone up?

thanks for responding by the way.

At CC I will have about 70 units completed by the end of spring before transfer
Last year my efc was 0 as my parent did not work. this year my efc is like 06700 (?dont remember exactly) and parent income is 50K.

SO yes it has gone up, but seeing as there was NO income at all last year it doesnt make sense that I would be completely disqualified this year. it’s not like 50k is that much considering all other expenses. Plus my parents are contributing ZILTCH to my college education, its up to me to pay everything. no joke.

so am If It says i’m not getting cal grant entitlement award, is there still a possibility for the cal grant competitive award. my gpa is 3.76 if that matters

^^^ you’re in the same situation as me.

the total income in our households is roughly 50-55K

This leads to EFC’s in the 4-6k range and completely disqualifies you for pell/state grants

sucks eh…

That EFC does not disqualify you for Cal Grants - they are dependent on your income and assets (and also limits on credits). If the email you got didn’t tell you why you aren’t getting one - log on to the cal grant website and it will tell you! It will say what your income is and if it is too high, etc. If you still can’t tell, please call them and find out. They do make mistakes or maybe they are missing a piece of documentation or something. The cal grant is worth too much money to not make that phone call.

Agreed with others about calling on the Cal Grant. With that EFC you are not eligible for a Pell Grant though. The fact that there are expenses and that your parents won’t contribute is not taken into account. Everyone has expenses and parents are expected to contribute. Otherwise everyone’s parents would refuse to contribute.

With EFC = 0 you had a Cal Grant B,
You can’t switch now from Cal Grant B to A
Sorry you are out, now you depend on school grant only

Two years ago I was qualified for B and A.
My school UCSD decided for me to take Cal Grant A based on my income, which goes up and down every year. (31K, 45K, 39K)

Family size and maximum income for Cal Grant B:
Six or more $50,900
Five $47,200
Four $42,200
Three$37,900
Two $33,600

To qualify for A - GPA >3.00 and income < 80K
To qualify for B - GPA >2.00 and income < 42K (family of 4)
After accepting one you can’t switch to other

what a sucky situation

Did you had AP units before College (in this case CC)? If yes, you get fewer semesters of CAL Grant eligibility because of it. Same thing happened to me.

Its unfortunate RCA, but the rules are the same for everyone. Its not random and the rules are published You have options. Don’t transfer, take a year off, find a cheaper school, etc.
