So I have a question.... i didnt do so great in high school so I was only eligible for a cal grant B.... Im currently attending a CCC and accepted my award for cal grant B.... is that good or bad for the long run since Im transferring in 2 years...? Is it better to put it on hold till I transfer in 2 years? Is there any chance I have upgrade to a Cal grant A since my GPA is much better now at the CC...?

Cal Grant B is for super low-income and is worth more than Cal Grant A. The effects of this are more obvious since you are planning to transfer and will not have to deal with the confusion of having the tuition/fees amount covered by another program during freshman year. You will receive the “living expenses” amount plus the amount of Cal Grant A for tuition/fees after you transfer.

You were awarded the best Cal Grant (ie, the one that pays out the most).

No. Cal Grant B gives more money than Cal Grant A. You only get tuition/fee assistance with Cal Grant A. But with Cal Grant B you get this plus the living expenses amount. The only catch is that Cal Grant B does not pay out the tuition/fee assistance money freshman year. However, this amount is made up in institutional funding freshman year.

UC example:

Cal Grant A:
tuition/fee assistance = $10,302

*Not valid freshman year, but this is made up by institutional funding. Cal Grant B officially only provides the “living expenses” amount freshman year.

For a transfer, you would not have to worry about the freshman clause part. Cal Grant B is worth $3,102 more than Cal Grant A for a transfer.
