recession reducing number of engineering jobs?

how is the current recession affecting current undergrads planning to major in engineering? i realize current seniors probably have it worse than current freshmen, but how much worse are we speaking here?

I don't think we really know for sure how bad it's going to be quite yet, but a lot of companies are still hiring. From what I've seen, it's still better to be an engineer than it is to be a whole bunch of other things, but engineering's not insulated, and we don't know how long it's going to be until it gets better.

This is how the market goes, though. Some up, some down. Ultimately, people are going to need engineers again. It's still a good profession to be in, stability-wise, though it'll be tough for a while.

We were out recruiting to local college campuses, and based on my observation the number of VERY GOOD candidates went up quite a bit. Lots of students with 3.3GPA and above,s ome candidates even had their MS and PEs but got laid off recently.

However, we are still hiring. It's just during these times, competition becomes fierce.

If it's bad, you can always find a position that may not deal with engineering, but pays your bills. You'll have something to do until jobs open up again.
