Can you get credit for taking AP classes in high school, even of you are a pre-med in college?

OP, yes, of course. I started college with 55 credits (from AP exams). I am using them all for credit and retaking NONE of the classes. (as per the recommendation of my pre-med advising office). This varies by the college you are attending now and how they handle AP credit, and the specific medical schools to which you plan to apply. Do your research and good luck.

Feel free to use your AP credit on anything but med-school pre-req’s (which vary med school to med school, as do their AP policies). As to pre-req’s, tread lightly and with full knowldege of med school policies. Based on what I have seen, med schools are more lenient with Calculus AP’s and possibly English AP’s. For anything else, you’ll be (at best) taking upper-level course to replace (which is sometimes/often not the best choice).

My D’s pre-med advising was substantially different tha plumazul’s. Her school instructed her to take the intro courses in her major areas as they wanted her to learn it “their way”. She used her credit for a year of Calc and added one semester of Statistics. It didn’t slow down her app process at all, but it did mean that a few programs were un-available.

As an aside, it is sometimes very difficult to locate a med school’s AP policy on their websites. It’s usually there, just hidden and written by a drunk.
