Recinded?

I have been accepted to FSU. Right now I stand at all A's and B's in all of my courses except for AP calculus where I have an F for the first semester. I know that some might say to just try harder however I have been trying going to get tutored, getting in study groups, even youtube. I just dont know what to do. Now I'm on the edge wondering if I am going to get rescinded.

Sn: I just emailed Admissions asking the same with the addition of me calling them tomorrow. Thanks

If you got an F the first semester, that could very well get you rescinded. In fact, I’d almost expect it to.

It’s a two semester course what if I do better in the second half?

You’ll already know where you’re going to college (national reply date is May 1st) by then. First semester is way more important.

FSU is pretty known for rescinding offers from those who mess up senior year, it always happens every year to plenty of kids.

Your second semester grades are way less important (they’re still important however). FSU (and many other colleges) have a deadline to decide whether you will be attending of May 1. Unless your high school gets out in April you won’t have your final grades until well after this deadline.

FSU still uses your second semester grades though. You’re supposed to send in your final transcripts after your finish your senior year. FSU uses that to make sure that you didn’t goof off in the second semester.

However, with an F in any course- AP or not- I think it’s tough to avoid getting rescinded. Plus, I know that you might think that you’ll do way better in your class this semester, but Calculus builds upon itself. If you are struggling this badly, it’s only going to get worse.

I know that Calc builds on itself I am caught up now my last two tests have been a B and a C I am starting to understand it more clearly. Since my chance of getting rescinded is so high all I can do now is attempt to do better this second half and see what they decide. At first I wanted to drop the class but I dont know what hurts their decision more a dropped class or an F or D

I’d say a D or an F is worse than a W.

I’ve been told that if you keep a C or a above in every class and have D in one class and you’ve struggled with it then they will be a bit lax

You have already been accepted. At the end of the year you will send in your final transcript showing your grades and that you have graduated. They will look at the final grades to determine if there is any need to rescind your acceptance. A grade of D or an F may likely do that, however with an AP course I am not so sure. If you have the opportunity to drop that class, and have it show up as a W rather than an F for the first semester and a W for the second, then I think I would do so if I was in your position. The head of admissions would be a good person to email and explain your situation. She will pull up your information and likely respond with a better answer than you can get on this website. Her name is Janice Finney. A great resource and extremely helpful lady.
Good Luck.

alongwait, the problem is that FSU looks for a decline in grades- and to FSU’s admissions people, an F in a course is considered a downward trend/decline. It doesn’t matter whether it’s an AP course or not- FSU looks for exactly these situations when deciding to rescind people or not. Since FSU focuses a lot on academic rigor, if you aren’t showing that you’re capable of achieving success in the college prep classes you’re taking, FSU might rescind your application.

I’m not saying it’s 100% that fsimeon would be rescinded, just that it appears likely.

A final grade of an F, yes, I agree. Since already accepted, they will only look at his final transcript. Sometimes a withdrawl from a class will show the F for the first semester anyway. I’m not sure what the transcript would look like. A guidance counselor might be helpful in this case. And the Head of Admissions at FSU would be the most helpful. I’ve had some experience with this lady and she is the best bet. At the very least, the most informative.

His final transcripts will include his first semester grades. FSU looks at both semester grades and doesn’t even look at the final grade. EVERYTHING is based off semester grades. Just because he’s been accepted already doesn’t mean that he won’t be rescinded if his second semester grade is better, because they don’t look at just that. FSU didn’t have his first semester grades to look at before they made their decision.

The conflict isnt the F but its withdrawing from the class pasbal. I am trying to decide if withdrawing from the class is better than taking the F. In addition I am going to my guidance counselor tomorrow and will see if I can make up the first semester online because I am confident that Ill have a B or C at the least in the second semester.

Directly from FSU’s website:

"Conditions of Admission

Conditions of admission are outlined on the OSC. Please remind your seniors (and if you’re addressing your juniors, it wouldn’t hurt to tell them) that we will conduct a final review of their application as soon as we receive their final high school and college (if dual enrolled) transcripts. A downward trend in the senior year grades, any senior grade below C, and/or any changes in the senior schedule involving academic courses could result in their offer of admission being rescinded. In addition, if your students have dual enrollment credit and their cumulative college grade point average is below 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale), their admission to the University will be rescinded."

Either scenario, a poor grade or a withdraw, can lead to your admission being rescinded. I would speak to admission before withdrawing, neither a F or a W looks good.

I have an idea.

What if you took CLEP test for Calculus? I don’t think FSU gives credit for full-blown Calculus for a CLEP exam, but they do give credit for the somewhat easier “Calculus for Business” course. I know that this is not an ideal situation and it doesn’t make up for a failed AP Calculus course, but if you withdrew and then CLEPed the course you might be in a stronger position than if you just failed it, and did nothing, when you have to go to admissions, hat in hand, beginning for mercy. :P

I agree that you should check with admissions before withdrawing though. They are wise to most shenanigans and they might react this strategy as “Wow, this student is at least trying” or they might say “Wow, this student thinks that he is getting one past us–we’ll teach him a lesson!”

I am not sure that withdrawing at this point will eliminate your F for the first semester. If you attend a public Florida high school, grades are reported on your transcripts per semester. Since you have completed the first semester, withdrawing now may not help anything. Also, high schools report semester grades to FACTS, which all Florida Universities have access to. So your grade is more than likely already available.

Retaking it online may help, but both grades may still show up on your transcripts. I would take to your guidance counselor, she/he should know.

SweetheartCroc is right, by withdrawing at this point FSU will view it for what it is, an attempt to hide a poor grade. FSU maybe more understanding if you own it.

I’m wondering what FSU admissions told you about this. I’ve been accepted to FSU for the Fall 2013 semester. I’m currently taking MAC 2311 at the local community college and having trouble with it. I had three A’s the first semester in my classes at my high school with an A and B at the community college with my dual enrollment course. Currently, I have three A’s in my high school courses with an A and D(MAC 2311) in my dual enrollment courses. I’ve emailed FSU admissions but haven’t heard back yet. I have 28 credit hours of Dual Enrollment courses
with no problems with the classes. I can withdraw from the course up until 3/21 but I’m not sure if this is what I should do. Hopefully, I’ll hear from FSU soon and my admissions won’t be rescinded.

dalma10
I’m wondering what happened? Did you still get in? Were you transferred to summer? Put on Probation?

My daughter is in somewhat the same situation, except her class was a 5th Math (not necessary) dual enrollment 1st semester. She was accepted for summer but now has this they didn’t see before. We are concerned about whether she will be rescinded or put on probation, etc. @pasbal any suggestions?

She did call admissions yesterday who stated they will review her transcripts from both HS and DE in May.

Thanks!
