My squad was TERRIBLE last night...they were giving up 10 minutes in, and not ONE person even came close to passing the stand up. So far I am sorely disappointed in my squads four degrees, it was an absolutely pathetic showing. Maybe 2, no more, were decent, but come on- this is where everything is supposed to culminate. I really hope they improve...

Wow....It is tough being on this end, not being able to see what is going on. Hearing the negative tone of the 2010's makes me wonder what the expectations were. If they are breaking to quickly were they not trained hard enough....or was the training not up to standard? What were you expecting of them? Is it your perception that 2010 had it harder, and the training was made easier?

Remember kids, this is not boy/girl scout camp......

Make them earn their Prop&Wings.

We're trying Marine...definitely trying. It's kinda hard though when half of them don't seem to care enough to try, and view it almost as a joke. But we're bringing the pain to them, I think they're starting to come around slightly this morning.

As far as my expectations, ds, pretty much all you can ask for is that they try- and they were clearly just giving up last night. And they should DEFINITELY know their knowledge by know, the stand up last night was so disgraceful and pathetic to the point of me questioning whether most of them should be recognized. They didn't even know general easy stuff. A year replaced from it, I could've gone up there last night and nailed 95% of the stuff they stumble bumbled over.

I don't know if 2010 had it harder (as it kinda depends on squad), but in my squad they definitely got a shock last night because the year was so easy for them and we brought it hardcore.

All I know is that it probably is hard for them mainly because of the contrast between the year and what it is now. It is like day and night, and they are definitely feeling it (one glance and you can tell that they are pretty much destroyed already).

We'll see how they improve over the next couple of hours...

Just wondering what squadrons are you all in???

I am in squadron 35.

I am also quite dissapointed. Not only do we have freshmen who are breaking, giving up, and blowing it off, but we even have a few who are losing their cool. One of my freshmen actually yelled back at me...and was immediately pulled out and reamed up and down by our staff. So far I have only seen maybe two people putting the amount of effort into Recognition that I would expect.

See, here's where I'm coming from. When it was 2010's turn last year, we were absolutely pumped. ICs and non-ICs alike prepared mentally (even if some didn't physically) and even the ones who were the most out of shape were giving 100%. I had 3 people in my squadron last year who were injured...and they gave the safety people a headache because they kept jumping in and doing the exercises when they weren't supposed to be. Everyone pushed their hardest...we had to be FORCED out of exercises even if we were hurt before we gave up. Our attitude was "Hell yeah, time to earn our right! Let's do this!"

With 2011, this is what I see: "Ah, well...I'll just get through it and then everyone will finally leave me alone." I see freshmen who don't care. They don't sound off when they're told to. They give up on their exercises quickly. They talk back. They yell back. I have seen, on average, 1 out of 20 cadets who are, in my eyes, earning the right to be recognized. It's all about the "let's do the minimum it takes to get through this so we can be left in peace." Not only is it a bad attitude, it's just plain wrong: as a cadet and a military member, you will NEVER be "left in peace," and will never have your life to yourself. This place is about sacrifice and effort, about putting forth your utmost for others.

Now don't get me wrong, as I have mentioned, there are definitely members of 2011 that I am impressed with. But as a WHOLE, it's a letdown. It's probably partly from seeing the other side of things, and we (2010) most likely think higher of ourselves than 2007-2009 did. There is a definitely a cycle of each class thinking they had it harder and did it better...I had an 09er tell me something similar about our class last year. However, I doubt our attitude was this lacking as a whole...we had more individuals who caused trouble, but as a whole we had attitude. I just don't see that from 2011 yet. They still have another day or so to show us, though.

I too have seen some people give up too early. On the other hand, there are some who are giving about 150%... One guy had to be pulled out, because we didn't want him to pass out.

Honestly, there are more restrictions being enforced on the upperclassmen than there were last year. However, most seem to bring it even harder when they get the opportunity.

Last night, there were a few good examples. Today, most 4 digs are getting close to acceptible, and a few are going above and beyond...at least in my squad.

I'm disappointed because 2011 is getting it a little easier than previous classes. Obviously, they can't control the weather and we can't blame it on them, but they're giving up during things like the Assault Course and Chutes and Ladders when there aren't even any hills to run up. I guess you can't have it all.

13...

And I'm going to echo that attitude problem...we've had more than one kid blow up at upperclassmen. They're paying dearly, but it is just unacceptable behavior in any circumstances-someone who does this does not deserve to be an officer, let alone recognized.

My 4 degrees did well on the assault course, but as I expected, it is getting to their heads and they think they are done. In terms of time, they aren't even half way there yet.

So, if so many in 2011 are doing so poorly, what happens if they really don't improve by Saturday evening? Does the class not get recognized, or do individuals not get recognized, or something else?

2012mom-- they'll get recognized. I don't know of anyone who hasn't been recognized. We obviously can't make them improve unless they have the willpower to do so. The only thing that they won't get (probably) is respect from their upperclassmen. But if they're trying and putting out and giving all they've got, they will truly earn that recognition. And that's the point of recognition. You don't have to be perfect, you don't have to be a physical machine, you don't have to be the best at knowledge. The most important thing is that you tried hard and you helped your classmates and put them above yourself during the entire weekend. They're slacking because they're more concerned with the pain they are experiencing rather than supporting a struggling classmate next to them.

Well no pictures of potter as usual, but it is really hard to hide a camera from the redhead.

oh and Hornet, G4C, Eagle, Raimius et. al. she doesn't look broken.

Hi again and before I start thanks for answering my dumb questions......so here goes again....what goes on during recognition? Is this a pass fail kind of thing when the 1st year students join the ranks---can you fail?

Recognition is like a rite of passage that goes from a Thursday night to a Saturday night. You basically get beat at every spare moment, you get treated like you're a basic again, everyone yells at you... etc. If you pass Recognition, you officially become "recognized" as an upperclassmen and you receive most of the privileges that the upperclassmen have (such as wearing backpacks on your back, walking across the Terrazzo, being at rest everywhere, wearing civilian clothes, etc.). You go through very physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging events so that you can prove that you deserve to be an upperclassman.

what happens if your not recongnized?

sweet, it's almost over

i've held off to keep from getting a wrong impression

the physical part is almost over. the class failed thursday, did okay friday, and today some have excelled and others got worse. overall i am very disappointed in the class, but alas, they'll get recognized anyway.

and i had some fun with Petko this morning. some him during the round robin, and he had no idea who i was. so as he left, i told him to finish strong, from eagle.

this year, you cannot "fail" Recognition. unless you quit, you pass. however, if you cannot complete certatin areas (courses, SAMI, etc) you will have to complete remedial training at a later date.

If you don't get recognized...you screwed up really, really bad. A form 34 (outprocess) will probably follow shortly. It is hard to fail the wing standards for recognition!

(...and when RTB said "beat," that means lots of PT, not physical violence)

Well it is 10:37 here in Las Vegas, and we are on pins and needles waiting for that excited post recognition phone call. Not much longer and they should be making the run to the "Rock". Next week Spring Break and clothes shopping.
