Congrats 2010!

By the way, if anyone is wondering about the "LUUUUUUUUUKE" hornetguy and I put at the end of our post, we found out last night that our exemplar is 2nd Lt. Frank Luke Jr.

An exemplar has been chosen for each class since 2000, and is usually a deceased Air Force or Air Corps hero, Medal of Honor recipient, someone of importance...you get the idea. He (or she) is chosen to exemplify the class.

Before recognition, if someone in a briefing says your class year, you respond with your class motto (for us, "Strength Within."). But after Recognition, you respond with your exemplar. So when Gen. Desjardins addressed our class, the entire freshmen class shouted "LUUUUUUUUKE!" We also were given our exemplar patch for our athletic jackets.

If you want to know about 2nd Lt. Luke, read here:

congratulations class of 2010

LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUKE!!!

"RTBs, we get our wings"

The Base newspaper say's during the recognition ceremony cadets were called into the hallway by name and the phrase "recognition granted", it goes on to say the name of cadets who did not make it the phrase "recognition denied" was used. Did any of your class drop during recognition?

i am not sure, but that second phrase is used for people who have already left, for whatever reason. they announced names far all 1300+ that were supposed to inprocess

So they even remember the people who didn't make it all the way through? Wow. That seems both understandable and odd at the same time. BTW, a belated congrats, 2010!

When we went through, the second name was a guy that left after BCT and we all got confused, that was until the door promply SLAMMED shut and made everyone jolt. Then a bit of worry as it got stuck closed, then on with the festivities. Neat ceremony.

A few cadets were granted recognition by USAFA but not by their squadrons. That must be a horrible experience for those few.

What does "RTB" stand for?

that would be horrible

Red Tag Bastards.

Thanks, I assume the "red tag" is the color of the name tag or something that is given to the 4 degrees?

Every class is assigned a new color rotating from gold, blue, silver, and red, in that order.

The color is the color of name tags cadets have outside of their rooms.

learn somethin new every day..

I guess my D in 2011 will be a GTB! :)

not quite. only red has that. here's the link to the full story

The official color is yellow for the class of 2011. However, most yellow classes refer to the color as gold. The very first graduating class of 1959 was a yellow class. The next time the color rolled around for the class of 1963, the class didn't care for the color yellow, and therefore refered to it as gold. The class of 1963 still refers to themselves as 'The Golden Boys'. The class of 1963 was also the first graduating class to spend all 4 years at the Academy campus when it was built.

I guess all of the females in my D's class of 2011, then, could refer to themselves as "The Golden Girls"! :)
