Recognizing grammar and usage error question!

Recognizing grammar and usage error question:

The Scientist conducting the experiment in the rain forest was less interested in why the particular species was prevalent than in whether they have violently taken over another species' habitat.

a)conducting
b)than in
c)they have violently
e) no error

I'm having trouble understanding why the answer is C) they have violently. I initially thought the answer was B) than in; since i thought the in was unnecessary. I know the word they is talking about species, but i thought it was correct since it is plural and they is plural.

Can someone please explain to me why C is the answer?

tense error. “was prevalent” is past tense “have… taken over” is present tense.
