My kid is preparing for Yale (political science), where could we find a reading list of books that would provide him with a solid foundation for successfully starting his freshman year?

[Yale Online Course Information | Search Courses](<a href=“Yale Course Search | University Registrar's Office”>Yale Course Search | University Registrar's Office)

If you go to the above website and type in political science, you can view the courses taught and textbooks required for each political science course. If look through the “100 level” courses, you might find a book there that interests your kid. You could also email one of the professors and ask them the same question: [Faculty Listing | Department of Political Science](http://politicalscience.yale.edu/faculty).

You might look at the PoliSci courses offered free at OpenYale, the University’s experimental open-to-all teaching platform. There are three poli sci courses offered, all by “biggies” in the field. Steven Smith’s popular Intro course might be a good place for your son to Start.

If you click through the courses, there are reading lists and syllabi to help you follow along with the lectures.

I’d suggest that he read books that interest him. Don’t worry about trying to read curriculum books in advance. If he’s interested in politics and political science, let him pick his own books. That way he’ll have his own ideas when he starts taking poli sci classes–much more valuable in the long run.
