Freshmans tend to fare better staying in the dorms around Washington Square. My daughter did a summer program in Hayden and it is on one of the best streets in the Village. It is the most requested dorm and ED’ers have first dibs. The upside is the location and the dining hall, has some LCT, BUT the downside is that there seems to have been problems in past with rodents and roaches. I don’t know if these things have been cleared up but some rooms are amazing and some are not.
She lived in Rubin freshman year and absolutely loved it. She was in a LCT which is doable and her view was of 5th avenue. If you looked left, you would see The Arch at WSP and if you looked right you would see the Empire State Building. It is in a very prestigious neighborhood, and has its own dining hall.
She is a sophomore now and is living in Union Square. I would definitely recommend, as freshman, living in the traditional dorms that are close to the school buildings and don’t worry about the apt style, you will have the following upperclassmen years to experience that.

are we allowed to pick which floor we dorm in?

What’s with that 12th street dorm? I hear it’s opening up Fall 2009 and there’s been a lot of disapproval because of it’s ugly appearance, 26 floor height, and the fact that it covers up a very old church

@Colij - NYU demolished St. Ann’s church to build that dorm (they kept the facade, so it’s literally the front wall of the church, you pass through it, and the dorm is behind). When you destroy a church, especially a historical church, there’s backlash from the community. People attended that church; there were weddings, funerals, etc…it’s not like knocking down a liquor sore.

Plus the church was pretty and small; 12th st dorm is very large and ugly. NYU has a reputation for knocking down historical/beautiful buildings and replacing them with large monstrosities. They also have a reputation of p issing off villagers that stems back to the 1830’s, so there’s some tension about that because NYU plans to expand even MORE (google NYU 2030 plan) and people are worried big Purple is taking over. Some locals also look down on NYU students as being bratty rich kids who get drunk everywhere and they don’t want more dorms in their neighborhood.

but nyu has done a ton of good things in that neighborhood and the locals don’t acknowledge it. 55,000 students is good for businesses, and they compromised on the historic Provincetown Playhouse by keeping the outside structure intact instead of demolishing it.

a lot of universities have this problem, precarious “town/gown” relations. it’s not uncommon.

Just to reply about the Provincetown Playhouse: While I agree NYU’s done some great things, and you’ll absolutely love it here, you’re facts are very wrong when it comes to what they’re doing there. Basically, NYU knocked down the entire building, and claims they’re trying to maintain the original facade (already backing out of their original promise.) Neighbors and residents of the community are seriously ****ed.

On another note, I live in Weinstein and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else for my freshman year. Not only are the dining halls really convenient, but our floor really bonded. The rooms are nice too-- just make sure you get a floor lamp, so you never have to turn on the awful florescent lighting. We made our room really comfortable, and I love it. Weinstein gets a pretty bad rep, but my friends in Third North always complain about being late for class. If I wake up late, I can be in the classroom in less than five minutes.

@lily - sorry, I didn’t know nyu knocked down the whole building - I heard they promised to keep the facade intact? so typical…I don’t blame the locals for being ticked off about this one. but missamerican is right, these types of locals vs college problems are pretty common. the morningside heights residents are always complaining about columbia’s expansions.

I didn’t dorm freshmen year, but I reccommend Hayden - great dining hall, convenient location. Did anyone hear about those freshmen girls who were gawking at Jude Law from Hayden (he lives next door) and he threw oranges at their window? pretty funny

@Alix - Yeah, the Jude Law - Hayden girls thing made the local tri-state area news a few weeks back. Apparently, some of them would scream at him and alert others about his being on his balcony at the time. But they supposedly got used to him and stoped hahah.

haydens the best,
