Recommend an engineering school

Hello,
I am slowly starting to apply to universities, but I’m wondering if I’m missing any good university, which is why I require you assistance. I am looking for good engineering schools (computer engineering). So far I’m going to apply to Georgia Tech, UT Austin, Texas Tech, University of Alabama and Texas A&M.
My SAT Scores:
Math: 660
Reading: 600
Writing: 640
I know that for UT Austin and GA Tech my chances are almost zero, but I’m wondering if there is any other school in the southern USA, that has a great engineering program and is more suitable for my scores. I heard about UNC Chapel Hill but they don’t offer Comp. engineering.
I am an international student, with a US citizenship.
Thanks for any help!

Look up ABET accredited Comp Eng programs. The ones you have listed are highly competitive and you’re not in the ball park.

If you have US citizenship, then you’re NOT an int’l.

Are you retesting?

How much will your parents pay each year?

But I think I am because I didn’t go to a US high school and don’t currently live there!
I am not retesting, and finances are not THAT big of a deal, but I will take them into account when I pick all the schools that I get accepted to.

I know about not being in the ball park, except for maybe texas tech… I will look it up, thanks!

You are not an int’l. You are an American abroad. You’re OOS for all state schools, but that does not make you an int’l.

Get your app in now at Alabama. You’ll have your acceptance within a couple of weeks or so after your transcripts and test scores are received.

You would be a domestic student, but with no state residency for in-state public school tuition and financial aid.

GPA? Class rank (for the Texas public schools)?

Are your parents willing to contribute the costs of private and out-of-state public schools that interest you?

This is a good search engine to know about, but don’t assume it has all programs

Good Luck

Since you are considered out of state, I actually think you may have a slightly better chance than in-state kids who are faced with the top 7% or 10% rule. (they can charge you more) You did not say your GPA but I am positive you can get into Texas Tech which has a pretty good engineering school and could be your “safe” school. Texas A&M is harder but I would apply immediately so that they consider you first. They look at all application prior to September 1 together and will usually notify you sooner. Get your recommendations in along with your transcript, resume etc. (set up a log-in through the Howdy portal so you can track it) UT has a great program but it is extremely hard to get in. Re-take your SAT or take the ACT if you want to have a good chance. Their out of state tuition is over $50,000 now so it is pricier than A&M which is about 37k. What about LSU, Oklahoma State or OU? They might be easier to get in and may have more of what you are looking for.

Wow, thanks to everybody for replying. The only reason holding me back from applying to all these universities is I’m trying to finish a project to add under my extra curricular activities.

mom2collegekids: Thanks for all the info. I’ll apply to U Alabama as quickly as possible.

ucbalumnus: My GPA is 4.1/5.0, and I’m top 1/3 of my class. There are 30 people in my class.

Mastadon: thanks, it’s actually really helpful, especially for the Texas universities.

woodlandsmom: thanks so much! I’ll apply to all schools prior to sept. 1. I can’t retake the SAT, because the first one from now is oct. 15th, and the ACT is mid-september, so it’s too late.

Thanks to EVERYONE for applying

I mean “thanks to everyone for applying!”
hahah now I got the two words mixed up!

Unless you have test phobia or a language or testing issue, you need to retake those tests, since those scores sound low based on your GPA. Scores will be reported before real decisions are made. Figure out why you did so poorly and fix it … on-line study program, reread the test instructions, whatever it takes. Study the appropriate math and bring that score up.

Engineering programs are pretty competitive for admission in most schools, they want you to succeed and the freshman science requirements are not easy at all.

NC State is the NC engineering school, no ABET accreditation at UNC. Arizona has 2 universities, maybe Fla, etc.

Definitely pick some safeties from 2nd tier state offerings or schools in the 60s or below with good engineeering.

Check www.abet.org to see which universities have accredited programs in computer engineering to get ideas. Consider University of Idaho and Montana State University and Washington State University, e.g. They have accredited programs and are great universities, yet also accept almost everyone who applies. Those aren’t Southern, but worth considering anyway. Also look at U of Arizona, West Virginia U, UT-Dallas, etc. – there are over 200 accredited programs to choose from. U Alabama-Huntsville also has terrific programs and co-op opportunities.

Georgia Tech and Texas are reaches for your major, but you should get into at least one out of Texas A&M, Alabama and Texas Tech… and possibly all three.

To find out some other schools with ABET-accredited Computer Engineering programs, go here and use the search function:

http://main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx

I was just thinking about this, because I was re-going through my common app profile…
But How could i possibly send the scores afterwards? If I take the ACT, then I’d get the scores back end of september… Isn’t that a bit late?
Should I apply to ALL schools now except GA Tech and UT Austin and send them the ACT Scores when I get them?
Thanks!
And thank you, mommyrocks, I definetely will, and thanks for advising me Montana state and U Idaho, I’ll definetely check them out!
Thanks again, y’all!

Your list leads me to perceive that you prefer big rah-rah campuses in the south. That being the case, you should also consider U of South Carolina and U of Kentucky. Particularly, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at UK is worth a look because several of its faculty members received their training at Purdue, MIT and Carnegie Mellon.

^ Auburn and Clemson also have ABET-accredited programs.

September is not too late for scores.

What kind of school are you currently attending? If you are attending a US-style International School, then the people there should have useful ideas about your application list.

Check the exam policies carefully at each of the places you apply to. Some will want the TOEFL or IELTS if the language of instruction in your school isn’t English.

Email the admissions offices at each place on your list, let them know that you are a US citizen who has been educated abroad, and ask them what they need from you. There are a lot of students like you, so colleges and universities have systems in place to help you apply. Do not be surprised if each place gives you a slightly different list of things to send them, just send whatever it is that A wants to A, and what B wants to B, and you will be fine.

Wishing you all the best!
