I want to major in Chem Engineering. I live in NJ and would like to stay within the Northeast. I'm having trouble finding good safety and reach schools that have good engineering programs near me.

My Stats:

UW GPA (Through Junior Year): 3.6, but a huge upward trend from C's Freshman Year to all A's Junior Year. This was mainly because of laziness and lack of maturity freshman and sophomore year.
SAT (First Time): 1830 (Taking again)
APs: Not offered until Junior Year. Taking 2 Senior Year.

Senior Year Schedule:
AP Chem
AP US Gov
H Physics
H Spanish IV
H English
Pre-Calc (No honors offered)
Intro to Engineering
Phys Ed (Required)

Extracurriculars:
Ted Ed Club (devoted to making our community more aware of the issues surrounding them)
Community Service Club
Joining more clubs that help others out this year

Other:
Ethnicity: African American
Hook: URM, Legacy at NYU

Thanks in advance

Rutgers School of Engineering (safety)
NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering (low reach)
Rochester Institute of Technology (match)
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (match)

It’s difficult to recommend specific schools, Why don’t you do some research and find certain schools and then we will discuss your potential chances of being accepted? As for your statistics, they are decent. Your GPA needs to be increased to gain admission to a very good engineering program - similarly with your SAT result. You should aim for at least 2000. Your extracurricular activities also are weak. You have quite some time, so you should attempt to partake in more activities (given you enjoy them).

It is not difficult to find a reach school like Cornell that has good ChemE, however, it is not really realistic with your current credential. You probably should talk to your school counselor as you are looking for some schools within your area. It is far more important to find matching schools first.

If I got my SAT up to 2000+ do you guys think Cornell would be a reasonable reach school if I applied ED? I realize that it would still be near impossible but would it be worth applying?

It is always worth applying - you may get lucky and be accepted! Good luck.

Can anybody recommend any safeties for me? My SAT superscored is now an 1850 and my Senior Year schedule has been changed to:
AP Chem
AP Comp Sci
Fundamentals of Calculus
H Physics
H English
H Western Civ
H Spanish IV
Gym

Moved to College Search & Selection
