recommend bikes in ucla?

I'm staying in sunset village, and im wondering if its practical to bring my bike...

I would like to know about scooters or skateboards.

No bikes if it's for getting around campus. Scooters or skateboards only if you're good enough to weave around people and not be annoying.

Walking is always the best method considering all the people, stairs, and hills.

No.

Hey, I'm planning to bring my bike... but I'm not going to be using to get around campus (unless I'm really effing late for a class). Can someone comment on whether it is practical to keep a bike locked to the bike racks outside of the res halls.. are there any bike thefts?

Also, are there any good grocery / drug stores biking distances from the campus?

Thanks.

Westwood has Ralph's, Long's Drugs, Whole Foods, CVS Pharmacy, Rite Aid and a few others I can't think of, all within comfortable walking/biking distance.

No. No no no no no.

No.

I mean. You can.

But no.

So what you're saying is... while the option is there it is not very practical and not too popular among students.

Did I interpet your "no no no" correctly? (Which remind me... now I gotta listen to that "nooo no no no... no no no.. you're not the one for me... woo ooh" song)

Wouldn't it be fun to ride a bike downhill of Bruin Walk? :)

theres a video somewhere online of a guy taking his bike down janns steps.

google it!

Felix- Only if you find dodging hundreds of people while speeding down a hill incredibly amusing.

I can't tell you how many times I've almost been run into by wayward bikes/skateboards/scooters/unicycles/etc.

And then once you get past ackerman you have to deal with going up hill and stairs and more people and really it's just not practical for getting around on campus. Great if you want to go into westwood (but even then going back up Gayley would be annoyong), but not so great if you want to get from the dorms to class. Also there's a pretty huge bike theft problem on campus. There are bike lockers in the parking lots but I'm not sure if there are any by actual classrooms, which would make using a bike to get to class even more pointless (because bikes are stolen out of the regular bike racks allllllll the time).

It's funny I used to be one of those speeding down the walk in the late 90's. Got many a tickets. :)

Yes. I would recommend if you get a bike not to get a super expensive one. If you absolutely must bring your $3000 mountain bike, there are bike lockers that would be a good idea.

mariopuzo, I've done the riding a bike down Janss thing - its fun :)

that, and if you find having to bike or walk your bike back up bruin walk amusing. :p

Yes, just a joke. Not for practical purposes. :)

In a fictitious situation, riding your bike down an empty Bruin Walk and trashing the bike after ( not returning up Bruin Walk) would be great entertainment.
