Recommend matches/safeties?

I'll repost my information below. I already know my reach schools. Can you suggest some matches and safeties for me (no preference between state schools, LACs, etc)?

High School GPA: 3.3

College GPA: 3.9

Current School: Community College in PA

Major: Social Science (hoping to study sociology and economics at my next school)

ECs: Editor-In-Chief of school paper, founder of Middle East discussion club, student government senator, President of Literary Society, Phi Theta Kappa member, honors program and honors club member, supplementary instructor in developmental math courses, research assistant and co-author on sociology projects with high profile professor, various intramural athletics, published one fiction book, etc

ECs in high school: baseball, track, 4 years of newspaper, was in a touring reggae/ska band (main reason I wasn't interested in school, haha), marching band, etc

Class Rank in High School: ~top 25-30%

SAT: taking in October

MISC: Moved to United States with my mother when I was in grade school. We came from rural Poland (underrepresented?) escaping because family had ties in the Solidarity movement. Also, I was out of school for a few years and I traveled a lot and actually lived in Iceland for sometime. I've been back half a dozen times or so and have written for newspapers about Polish migrant labor in Iceland. Lastly, no one in the history of my family has a post-secondary degree. Not a soul.

Penn State, Virginia Tech, James Madison, many SUNY’s, Maryland?

There’s no reason to make a new thread, you can just ask in your other thread…

This is the second time you’ve posted on one of my threads without answering it - today. Please take out your frustration on something else. We’re all trying to work together here.

With your fascinating background and your strong college GPA - you probably will get into at least 50% of higher end schools out there. If you can get strong recommendations and write an amazing essay that highlights one of your passions (maybe that encorporates your personal story), probably even more.

Your approach should be more of finding what schools are a match for YOU. What is your major? What is your passion? What school offers you a place to take that intellectual passion and flourish? You really need to start surfing the web and reading up on the programs that excite you and then target your applications.

You probably didn’t get many responses on your post for a variety of reasons. First, you have stellar college GPA and ECs - if your SATs turn out well - you are in the top of the transfer pool and most folks are going to think “Gee - what’s he fretting about??” All we can say is “Good job. You’ll get into a lot of places.” Also, just as much of a problem in terms of getting a lot of responses - your question is too vague - you just want folks to list tons of college names based on a vague major (soc and econ). Pick one or the other or tell us some angle that might trigger some specific matches.

Also, you were unspecific about other issues - is financial aid an issue? location? etc? You might not care what type (LAC, public, etc) or where – but that is so vague that most posters will skip it. If you target your question you MIGHT get more responses. Try a question like “Need LAC, East Coast, financial aid, Econ specialty suggestions”. Or at least, give that a try - I think you might get more responses.

And finally - use a topic line that is more specific. Don’t label it “Safety/Matches” – say something more like “Need LAC specializing in Econ Suggestions” - and you will drive more traffic to your post for folks who know about Econ or are interested in Econ and more likely to have some ideas.

Me? I stumbled upon your post because I was bored. I know nothing about Econ. I’m no help. So - target your subject line, target your question.

Annika

Annika,

Great reply. Thank you.

My focus is on world-systems perspective. It’s a facet of sociology that incorporates historical and comparative economic and political sociology. It certainly is my passion and it’s where my professor and I have concentrated our work and research.

One of its founders is a Professor Emeritus at Yale. Another is at Johns Hopkins. Of course, I would be floored to be able to work with either of them. However, no one can count on getting into schools like this. I suppose that I am a little intimidated by the process of focusing my choices and wanted to throw it into the court of public opinion.

That being said, I would very much like the following things:

Generous financial aid
Good Professor access and research opportunity
<10k students
North Eastern US (open to others, this would be easiest)

Sociology programs, preferably with a historical and comparative concentration, and their quality are the most important consideration for me.
