Try…Tufts / Brandeis? You’re from CHN?

Vanderbilt, Washington University in St. Louis, Colgate, Washington and Lee

Vanderbilt and WUSTL don’t sound “safety” to me…they are not much easier than U Virginia or Haverford…esp. if financial aid is considered.

Colgate isn’t a safety either. Do you need financial aid? If you do, the only safety schools really are going to be ones in your home country. Otherwise… maybe one of the SUNYs, or maybe… Northeastern?

Reed could be a match, a bit more selective than Grinnell. Reed considers Grinnell, Haverford and Williams to be peers. Reed, Swarthmore and UChicago attract some of the same students.

thank you guys! I really appreciate your help!

well yes I am from China, and I don’t need financial aid.

@vossron:do you mean students who are really into academics?
well I have got to admit I am one of those students, and academic excellence is very important to me. But the workload at schools like Reed and st John’s really scares me off.

Yes, and your chances go way up (at all need-aware schools) as an international in this economy if you don’t need financial aid.

Kujalulu, How about Emory U in Atlanta? Emory U is another need aware school. Since you don’t need FA, you have very good shot. Of course, Emory U is located in suburb of Atlanta.

Since you came from China, I would recommend college in the big city/suburb of big city for you. I found in general most international students have difficult to adjust small town/rural environment in US. For that reason, I wouldn’t apply for Middlebury if I were you. It located in very rural area in Vermont.

From your list, it seems that you prefer liberal art education. In reality, most comprehensive schools in the US are Liberal Art based.

I would add the following as match
Emory (Atlanta)
Tufts (Boston)
Boston College (Boston)

For Safety, I would pick
SMU (Dallas)
University of Miami (Miami)

One more thing, since you don’t need FA, you should able to get in many colleges on your list.

thank you vossron and jim1980! I am now looking into Emory and Tufts:)
