Recommend me some Good Out of State Schools

that I could get into with my stats, and are also really good for Doing Pre Med major Chem as an undergraduate??? 3.42 uw and a 3.60 w gpa with my extracurriculars being Key Club 4 yrs, Hospital Volunteer, Track and Field 3 yrs, Tutor at local elementary school, John Hopkin Youth Search Award, and Football for 2 yrs. Also my senior year workload would be AP CHEM, AP CALC, Honor's anatomy and physiology, with the rest of my classes being regular. I want to be Pre Med with Chem Major. How would I look with all this aside from taking the SAT which I will take later. Upward trend of about PLUS .33. Please recommend me some good pre med schools in Chicago, Boston, or NY area where I could have a good chance of getting into. Again SAT's will take in next year with ACT. I want to keep my option open if I do not get accepted into Pitt.

Is money an issue - that is the main question. Also you should ask this question in the main College Admissions and search forum

No because I’ve been saving up from working a job in the summers, plus if I finish with a certain amount of tuition payed my parents will pitch in with the rest. So it looks like no not an issue. Ohh didn’t know about the main college admission forum here, thanks for letting me know.

Check out SNUY Stonybrook on Long Island. They have trains to NYC but it takes a couple of hours. Very strong in bio/medicine and relatively inexpensive and easier to get into than Pitt.

Look at SUNY-Buffalo. They also have a medical school there. You might be able to get merit money and it would then be cheaper than Pitt.

wow thanks guys I’ll check it out if I do not get accepted into Pitt, is SUNY-Buffalo the same as SUNY stonybrook or they same college just different area???

Nevermind Had bad question lol i’m guessing different branches of SUNY.

Are you a junior? How did you do on the PSAT?

Are you saying that you haven’t taken the ACT or SAT yet?

Why not take them later this spring to determine weaknesses and work on those over the summer and then retake???

As for money…be SURE that your parents will pay for an OOS public…some parents won’t.

Also…finish with a strong GPA…you’ll need it for better merit chances.

I am a sophomore atm. No I haven’t taken the SAT’s or ACT’s yet, but plan to take them both Junior Year. I did take PSAT, but can’t recall what I got. I will be working on studying for SAT’s all summer. Yea my parents are willing to pay for oos. Yup trying to bring GPA as high as possible. Regret starting off slow and average when I could have done much better, but I learned valuable lesson to start off well as freshman in college.

I would suggest checking out the University of Rochester, but if you are looking for backup places to Pitt, I wouldn’t count UR a backup. It is probably more difficult to get into. Case Western (Cleveland) might be similar.

As a suggestion, if you can’t get into Pitt, you might want to reconsider Chem as a major for Pre-Med. You’ll be needing a high GPA for med school and Chem is not considered one of the “easier” majors to do this with if your stats aren’t high enough to get you into Pitt.

Within our state, many students with lower stats tend to do better going to some of the LACs when heading Pre-Med. Consider Juniata, Elizabethtown, Millersville, York, etc.

If you have the stats to get into Pitt, then consider schools like UR or Case Western as alternatives to compare.

If will be difficult to have ideas about where you could actually get in without ACT/SAT/PSAT scores.

Not really interested in LAC schools because I just want to take classes within my major and goal not an all around education. Also want hopitals nearby school for other opportunityies.

Pitt should be relatively easy for a future pre-med to get into. If you didn’t make it into main campus, then I suppose you could start at one of their satellite campuses and transfer. If it’s your dream school, you might not need many other options. Those I can think of with a good rep and research options are as difficult or more difficult to get into. Pitt was a safety school for us.

Pitthopeful,

Lots of parents of high school sophomores say things like “don’t worry, we can pay for it”, but the truth is that college is way more expensive than a lot of parents think. Unless your parents have something like $250,000 saved for your education, you really do need to clarify the money situation with them. Even if they do have a lot of money available, they might prefer to spend less on your undergraduate degree and save their money to help you with med school. Medical school admission is based heavily on your grades and your MCAT score so a cheaper school can get you to your final goal.

Good places to learn about paying for college are the Financial Aid Forum here, [FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans](http://www.finaid.org) and the book “Paying for College without Going Broke”.

Good luck with everything!

Thinking a little bit more about what you’ve said, if money truly isn’t an issue or if your stats are high enough to garner merit aid, you really ought to consider the University of Rochester. They are very open with class choice and have their hospital right there with oodles of research options.

Pitt is good too, of course, but for a comparison, take some time and visit.

I still think you’ll make it into Pitt if your stats are good enough for Pre-med in general. At our school even students with lower stats (not LOW, but lower), nice extra curriculars (esp medical) and good letters of recommendation make it into Pitt. I don’t think you’ll have a problem.

Thanks guys I’ll look into University of Rochester more. Well this all depends on if I get into Pitt or not like I said again??? I want to keep a plan B open as well. And those are my stats without SAT and ACT taken.

I’m with HappyMom, make sure your parents understand how much it’s going to cost. And if med school is the goal, consider the costs of that as well. You really need to read up on all the medical school threads. And if you’re not interested in an “all around” education, take a good look at the distribution requirements for the schools you apply to. It may be more important than you realize because I just remember reading something about the MCAT changing to include humanities.

Just to be clear, Rochester is not easier to get into than Pitt IMO.

It’s difficult to gauge whether you have a decent shot or not without ACT/SAT scores. GPAs are very variable. I’ve seen 4.0 get 1700 with students testing into remedial classes (after supposedly taking higher level classes in high school) and 3.4 get 2250 without AP classes or equivalent. Schools vary. Class rank might give us an insight.

Yea you guys are right, University of Rochester might be a little out of my reach, I still think i have a decent chance at Pitt if everything goes well. Hoping I can get in, so I won’t have to rely on option 2 which is Duquesne safety school and oos state schools with good pre med undergrad I could get into.

How is Boston University??? You think it’s a good fir for a pre med undergraduate??? Also could I get into that possibly??

Get some scores, then come ask.
