Recommend me some GREAT schools!

Hey, I have been here a while and had a few topics and I am looking to make/narrow down a list.

What I am looking for:

Academics: Serious academics with strong Physics,Engineering(Aerospace,EE),Astronomy/Astrophysics/Planetary Science/Cosmology(VERY rare),CompSci/Computational Neuroscience and Political Science/IR/European History programs. Applied Physics major is a plus. Science Technology in Politics program is a plus as well. Top Notch Research opportunities are required. If it is a small LAC, a 3-2 engineering is required.I highly decorated Professors is huge plus.

Location/Campus:: I prefer an urban local, suburb is still ok. I just like to do a lot and walk around.I am very fond of Gothic architecture as well as Modern(aluminum and glass ) science buildings.I like an extravagant campus building wise. Nice grass helps and a nice quad too. I like a nice campus gym
. I would like a fairly big campus as well. Model are Oxbridge,Harvard, and UCLA. I live in RI,so the Northeast is convenient,I plan to live in California when I finish 5-9 years away...;( so that is convenient in way, but I am willing to go anywhere

Study Abroad: A strong study abroad at say Oxbridge or Europe or Japan or China is big plus

Other I am looking for a large student body with a decent male/female ratio that it exceptionally nerdy in technology and would get say a Star Trek or science joke or something.I would love a roommate that program robots or such. I want a politically active university that it involved civilized politics and lobbies congress or raises money for a cause instead of holding pointless protest(they are VERY amusing.) I want to be with students that love learning and don' drool when thinking. I want to go to school with future Presidents,CEOs and Nobel Prize winners. Work Hard/Research Hard/Play Hard/Succeed Hard. I don't smoke or drinking, but I don't mind those who do. A large amount of Rhodes or Fulbright scholars is a plus. I want a school recruited heavily at by the Department of Energy,NASA JPL,Lockheed Martin,Boeing,Northrop Grumman,The U.S Government,MS,Apple,Intel,HP,AMD,Nvidia,EA,Sony,,,etc

My life revolves around technology, science and politics.

Imagine if MIT,Caltech,Yale and Oxbridge had a child somehow....I would love that child more then anything

I am rising junior so GPA and rank are estimated

GPA- 3.3UW 3.58W(maybe a bit higher or lower)[rising trend]
Classes:All APs when offered.
Rank:No Clue...At least Top 25%
SAT:2160, 760CR,720M,680W
SATII: 780 US Hisotry, 740 Phsyics

A lot trouble freshemen year, I am currenty have anxierty, depression and ADD and I am seeking treatment

I want to say CMU for the tech part, but it definitely does not fit your specifications of a big campus or an equal male/female ratio..

But I think your interests are so varied that you should narrow them down, which is okay since you're just entering junior year. You most likely will figure out by then.

Anyway, Tufts, JHU, and Georgetown sound good for IR.

Stanford seems to be best for what you're describing.

1) It's strong in disciplines across the board. It's hard to find a weak program at Stanford. It has a top engineering program, ranked #2 in the nation (only behind MIT), and is strong in all the disciplines you listed (generally ranked in the top 10).

2) Tons of interdisciplinary programs are offered (that's a big focus of the curriculum and research), and you'd probably be able to find something in science/tech in politics.

3) Amazing research opportunities. With top faculty and tons of top grad students, there's plenty of research going on. Stanford also allocates more money exclusively for undergraduate research than any other US university--$4 million.

4) It's suburban, but has easy access to San Jose and San Francisco, as well as many other Bay Area cities such as Berkeley and Oakland.

5) It has an amazing quad area.

stanford quad - Google Image Search

6) It doesn't have Gothic architecture, but its architecture (Spanish Mission Revival) is beautiful.

7) Tons of athletic facilities, as well as a big gym.

Campus Athletic Facilities - Student Life - Stanford University School of Medicine

8) The campus is huge. It sits on a few hundred acres.

http://s3.amazonaws.com/mobicious_production/000/183/183999.jpg

9) The study abroad program is awesome. China (Beijing) and Japan (Tokyo) are options, as well as Berlin, Paris, Florence, Madrid, Santiago... There is also a study abroad option in Oxford. Roughly half of Stanford's students study abroad, and its goal is to get all students to study abroad at least once. (Many students go to multiple programs.)

http://osp.stanford.edu

10) The student body is large, but not gigantic. A little under 20,000 students.

11) The school is split roughly 50/50 in male/female.

12) It's known as a very techy/nerdy school. Awesome in the sciences and engineering, but the humanities, social sciences, and arts as well.

13) The campus is very politically aware. Public service is an emphasis.

Welcome to Haas Center for Public Service: Stanford, CA.

14) Stanford emphasizes intellectual vitality in its admissions--it looks for students who love to learn.

15) There are 16 Nobel Laureates currently on the faculty.

16) Stanford produces many leaders in business and politics. It has produced the second most number of billionaires, after Harvard.

17) It's in the top 5 schools for Rhodes, Marshall, and Fulbright scholars.

18) Definitely work hard, play hard. Also, research hard (of course) and succeed hard. :)

19) You don't need me to tell you that Stanford's grads are heavily sought after. ;)

Stanford is pretty much the child of MIT, Yale, Oxbridge, etc., except better. :D

Stanford is obvious extremely ideal, but it isn't going to happen unless I stumble across a cure for cancer tomorrow or hit the lottery.

It's a reach, yes, but your scores are strong (I bet they can be much higher by the time you apply), you have an upward trend, and you have extenuating circumstances. Plus, you're a rising junior, which is the most important year. I'd say you have a good shot, if you get your grades up and write excellent essays.

UChicago is the perfect match for you. Gothic architecture, renown Pulitzer prize winners, Nobel Prizer winners, famed for its physics programs, nice quad, ugh.....very political savvy. Love of learning, work hard (play hard?) that sort of stuff. UChicago's campus was modelled after Oxford, Oxbridge, or Yale, one of those three. UChicago modelled after JHU, nation's first research institution, was profoundly influenced by us as well :)

My GPA is still weak as hell and cant get much better at all.

So far I've got
Stanford(massive reach)
UChicago(big reach)
Tuft(big reach)
JHU(big reach)
CMU(reach)

It is 3AM here, I am off for the night.

Cornell and Michigan come to mind. Your GPA is a problem at either, but Michigan at least will ignore freshman grades & recalculate GPA based on sophomore-junior only. There are some other schools that fit many of your criteria, but I think your priority at this point should be to nail your junior year grades, get your GPA up and show a rising trend in your grades. Your SATs are strong but at most top schools, your grades are going to be the primary determinant as to whether you're competitive. That's in your hands.

I think I read "3-2" and I immediately thought of Haverford's program with CalTech. That's a long way in the future for you, but I think attending both Haverford and CalTech would be ideal for you!

Chicago might be a nice choice too, but it lacks engineering. We have physics geeks aplenty, but they are a slightly different stripe from engineering geeks.

The other option would be to look at schools that have both arts and sciences and engineering schools. Cornell and Rochester-- Cornell would be a reach and Rochester a high-ish match.

Rice University immediately came to mind when I started reading the top. Lots of applied physics, and seems possible depending on the situation of that GPA.

Regarding the buildings, when I was there for a summer program this year some of the other students and I talked about how walking around the campus made us feel like we were attending 19th century Oxford. Also, there is LOTS AND LOTS of grass and openness, as well as a fairly good gym, and even an undergraduate pub.

And on a side note, MOST decent schools have good recruiting from those companies. More from the best schools of course, but thats also against stiffer competition. So for that its not much what school, but how much you work.

Anything more in the realm of match?
I think I have a good list of reaches.

I

bump
(10 char min)

What about Washington University in St. Louis? They have 3-2 options and lots of really bright kids who would probably get your trekkie references.

It has a beautiful campus on the edges of St. Louis with lots of Gothic architecture, etc. Pretty hard to get into, I hear, but your scores are good, and with really recs and essays, you might make it.

Good luck, and take care of yourself!

You have me rolling on the floor laughing, here, otherwise known as ROTFL

I mean don't instead on don'......Why is that funny?
Isn't that what everyone wants?

I still need more matches

We need more details about you. ECs, what state you live in, and how good is your high school.

I am from Rhode Island :(
My school is ok, not ranked or anything.

I have some good ECs.
