Recommend Music Schools in NC

DD is senior and wants to attend college close to home (2-3 hours) and major in Music. Just received an unsolicited job offer in NC with promotion/raise, 300+ miles from current home. Lots to think about...not sure what DD will want to do about college. This is not an area of country we never even considered for college. Looking for some quick music school recommendations in NC in case we move later this year. Thanks

North Carolina School of the Arts seems like the logical first recommendation.

She might also consider Appalachian State, East Carolina University, UNC Chapel Hill, and UNC Greensboro.

BassDad hit the highlights. UNC School of the Arts (name changed this year) is a conservatory type environment...only arts programs (theater, dance, music, technical theater, etc). The others are full universities. What instrument? And is this for music education, music performance or what?

We toured Appalachian State this past spring and thought it was a great environment, and a very well-run school. Even though it does draw most of its students from NC, the student body appeared to be diverse enough that a "non-native" would feel perfectly at home there. Very friendly, too. And Boone, the town it's attached to, is fun and funky.

Thumper1...sorry, things are crazy and I did leave out some key info. DD is classically trained vocalist. She is leaning toward Music Education but is also looking at Vocal Performance. She also enjoys singing with a chorus.

I think the best choice is UNCG. They have one of the strongest voice faculties anywhere. They have a gorgeous facility and put on lots of operas. There are good opportunites for performance - even though they have a fairly large grad program. My D took a sample lesson with Dr. Walker there and loved her. She did lots of research on the teachers and got great feedback. We were also told that the faculty gets along really well and there is very little political stuff going on in the group - very important in my book. She and I both corresponded with current students and grads and heard overwhelmingly wonderful things. You should definitely visit. It was very difficult for her to turn down UNCG. Had she not found a school she liked as much closer to home, she would be there now. She also really like Appalachian State but we didn't find it to be at the caliber of UNCG. WE also visited UNC School of the Arts but decided against mainly because she wanted a university experience.

If your daughter is considering Music education with opportunities to perform, I second UNCG. Agreed, great facilities...and the state universities know what is needed to get music education certification.

Another school that we heard good things about for voice was Meredith College. It is all girls so that is probably a consideration, but it was described as having a faculty that works well with young voices.
