I am a little confused about the whole recommendation thing.....
For the common app (and others), is it generally okay to submit the application online and then send the recommendations by mail to the colleges? Basically, if a college offers a paper recommendation form, will it be alright?
Does it usually go over well if you ask the teachers/counselors for the recommendations back to make copies (esp. for the common app) or does that not usually happen?

Recommendations are sent by mail, not online. You're supposed to give the recommendation form(s) to your teachers, for each school you're applying to. They'll print out/make the copies and send them to each college individually (so make sure you give them an addressed envelope with each recommendation form).

i know that at UVA that teachers have to use an online recommendation. that they are available at michigan and other places too... i'm wondering at these places, is it okay to mail in if everything else is on the web?
and can i mail it myself or do they have to?

Your teachers have to send it; as to whether it's okay to send it by mail though, you're better off asking the colleges themselves.

Just a note--I looked at the UVA websites, and I can't find anything that says that to submit recommendations to UVA, teachers/counselors must use an online form. They say that they don't have a specific form, and that students can apply online or by printing their application and mailing it in.
