My daughter goes to school in Europe. None of her teachers ever dealt with a US recommendation before. Advice on how to get the best possible recommendation under the circumstances would be much appreciated.

Would like to her from International families who have handled this problem.

There was a German teacher who was asking for advice on how to write recs for a student of hers some time last spring. I corresponded at some length with her both on a CC thread and via PM. Send me a PM and I'll share the advice I gave her.

We live overseas too. S1 got a rec from a S African professor. We tried to explain the American 'soft-sell' concept to him as he did like S1--but to no avail. Rec was standard Anglican understatement--a one liner no less. "_____ is not likely to do well on his English Bursary exam." (He got a "B" on the exam some months later).

Nonetheless, S1 got into a school he wanted to attend and is happy as a sophomore!

Try not to sweat it. Look at it as a bit of comic relief for the admission committees.
