Hi!

I'm a junior, and I've decided to ask my teachers for recommendation this year so that they have time to write them and all that.

Couple questions:

1) I haven't decided which colleges I want to apply to yet, and while I could give teachers a rough idea, I don't have definites. How should I ask the teachers to send in the recomendations? Give them to the school? Save them? Or would it be appropriate to say that I'll update them on everthing in the fall?

2) Should I give the teachers a resume? Each of the teachers is an advisor for one of my major extracurriculars, but might not know everything I do.

3) There is an additional teacher who was my teacher last year, but retired. He tutored me briefly this year. He has offered to write me a recommendation letter, and said he would write about when I was in his class (10th grade) and what he knows about me through tutoring and other ECs (11th). Is this appropriate?

Thanks!

Isn’t it kind of early to ask for recs? The 2011 apps aren’t out yet, which means that teachers have no way to send to send them to the school. When you get the recs, give them to the teacher directly.

Yes.

It’s fine, but try to get teachers from 11th grade as well.

Just to clarify, the other 2 teachers are 11th grade ones. One will be teaching me in 12th grade as well.

How do people usually go about it when they ask teachers for recommendations at the end of junior year?

RE: timing. My daughter (who’s graduating from HS this month) asked her teachers as eleventh grade was winding down. Her guidance counselor’s advice was, “Wait until after graduation, and then ask before they go away for summer vacation.” Both teachers seemed to appreciate being able to take their time with the letters, and had them done by half-past September.

They should be able to type up the actual letters over the summer, and send them out in the fall when you’ve finalized your choices.

I just found out that Columbia Engineering requires a math teacher recommendation letter. Neither of NY math teachers know me that well. Should I ask the 11th/12th grade teacher or the 10th grade teacher who likes me a little more?

Also, how do you ask people outside of school (boss, volunteer coordinator) to write an additional letter of Rex? How do they send it in?
