Recommendation Letter Schedule

I'm a Junior and have basically picked out the teachers I want for college recs.
I am wondering when should I ask the teachers?
Should I ask them now to give them a heads up or wait till next year and give them all the stuff they need.
Right now I haven't had time to really look at colleges yet, although I want to go to something of HYPMS caliber.

Well, you could just ask them now while they still have a high opinion of you and remember you. Then you could just store the letters away until November when you need them.

I was thinking of asking them next week. APs will be over and seniors are gone already (at least at my school) so everything’s calmed down. Even if they don’t write it, I think it’s good to give them a heads up. And yeah, they definitely remember you more clearly right now. I’m kinda nervous haha. It just seems like it’s so formal…

Anyone else asking this year?? All my senior friends just said to do it fall of senior year. My counselor recommended this year though…so it’s not all hectic in the fall. Especially since I plan to apply early somewhere

All of the teachers I will ask for recs have written me recs in the past for summer programs or for internships. And one of the ones I will ask I had for 10th grade and I will have again in 12th grade. Another one I’m thinking of asking I may have next year if I can’t get out of her class. She writes me great recs and adores me and refers to me as “one of [her] treasures” even though I hate her class. Because I hate it so much, I’m not sure if I want the rec.

I think if you have never had a rec from the teacher, it’s a good idea to give them a heads up. Most people are probably in that situation. But if the teacher has written you recs before and seems to know you quite well (one teacher I will ask for a rec writes monthly letters to my parents calling me a “superstar”), I think it’s fine to wait until rec season.

And besides, in my school, the week after AP week is finals week, so it’s pretty hectic to notify them at that point. Especially since because I’m in so many APs and the teachers don’t give exams, I’m only going to be at school for about 10.5 hours next week.

I don’t need to ask.

My Psychology teacher already informed me that he is writing me a recommendation whether I like it or not, and he told me to come see him during the first week of school next year.
He said that he will cry more than I do if I don’t get into Emory, so I’m hoping it’ll be really good =]

And you only need one, right? All my other teachers think I’m loud and kind of annoying…

how many teacher recs do you usually need?

I think one humanities and one math/science usually.

Also, is it advisable to get an additional rec? (ie club advisor/sponsor (who is not my academic teacher), research professor)

I notified the teachers I wanted recommendations from prolly May/June of junior year and then followed up this year.

I know you want to have one science and one humanities recommendation, but do you think psychology would be “science-y” enough even though my school counts it as humanities? I plan to double in English and Psychology, so I thought it would be a good idea. Also these are some of my strongest classes with my closest teachers, so I though they would be good choices.

Everyone at my school in (those with APs, honors) notified teachers their senior year in the fall, usually early to mid for early action/decesion. All were fine with it, the teachers that is. If you’re a good student and well-liked by the teacher or have that “special bond” with him or her, then the teacher will probably expect to write one anyway.

So long story short, just wait until next year…they have other things to worry about over the summer than some kid’s recomendation.

i asked my teacher a week ago and she asked me to email my common application link so she could fill out the teacher portion online, and do the letter over the summer when she has time.

I asked two teachers in September of senior year, and one had it done in a couple of weeks, but the other kept telling me he’d get it done, over and over, until it was December. So I was worried he wouldn’t finish it and asked another teacher, who had it in a week or two. I asked a math teacher (10th grade, I still visit him all the time), SS teacher (again 10th grade, I visit him when I get a chance, but he writes awesome recs), and my earth science teacher (I’m planning on teaching earth science, and even though I had her in 8th grade, she knows me well and I see her all the time, grade papers, etc). The social studies teacher ended up getting his letter in on time and I sent all three.
