I have a non-core teacher (Accounting) who I really want to ask for a recommendation letter, but I'm afraid that colleges won't like that it's not from a core subject teacher like math, english, foreign language, etc. Does it really matter who the recommendation comes from, as long as it's from an academic subject? The teacher has known me for around 3 years (taught me for 2) and I know he would write me a way better letter than any of my alternatives.

Check with the colleges you are applying to see if they have specific requirements. Some colleges explicitly ask for one recommendation from an English/Social studies teacher and one from a Math/Science teacher. If your colleges do not have specific requirements, I suppose an accounting teacher would be okay. Just make sure s/he will write you great letter, like the “good” examples on MIT’s website: [Writing Recommendations | MIT Admissions](How to write good letters of recommendation | MIT Admissions)
