<p>Hi, does anyone know if Columbia prefers academic teachers over other subjects? By academic I mean math, science, language, English, or history teachers. I've asked my English & Spanish teachers from last year but I feel that my band teacher (I've been in her class for at least five years and she knows me pretty well) will write a better letter than my English teacher.
Also, the website says they discourage any extra letters of recommendation. Is this rule strictly adhered to or do most send another letter anyways?
Thanks.</p>
<p>Where does it say that on the website? I think you can attach a third...</p>
<p>"May I submit supplementary recommendations?
The Committee discourages the submission of additional recommendations, as admissions decisions will be based primarily on the required recommendations from your high school teachers and secondary school/guidance counselor. In general, we recommend the submission of a supplementary recommendation only if the writer has worked with you in a research or college course capacity."

<p>I'm hoping I can still attach a third...?</p>

<p>Lots of students/alums on here (including myself) attach a 3rd. I think I may have had 4, but I don't remember.</p>
