Do letters of recommendation have to be college specific? Meaning, does the recommender have to state the name of the university/college in the letter?
I want to have an employer write me a letter and I am planning to submit that letter to a number of schools, so I feel bad if I have to tell her to address it to each school specifically when I add her on common app as a recommender.
No. And almost all recs are not college specific .
No, and the Common Application/Coalition application will ONLY allow a recommender to submit ONE letter that can be assigned to multiple schools. This is why most recommenders write generic letters, and colleges understand you’re applying to multiple places lol. The exceptions would be if the school only accepts a supplemental LOR if the recommender emails/mails it (so it’s fine to be specific b/c it’s only being sent to one school,) only applying to one school etc.
Hope that helps! Good luck with admissions!
This is an old link but I have a new question. I have two additional letters of recommendation that is applicable to what I was studying this fall. If these additional recs are sent to Common App and one thru my school, will the colleges that accept extra letters automatically receive the new letter(s) from Common App? I know through my school they will ping it to the college list directly. The Common App people said they might or might not send automatically, I can’t get a straight answer.
