Recommendation letters

my teacher recently sent my rec letters to mit through USPS (I am an intl. student) & when I checked the status of the post online, it said,

Notice Left, December 26, 2008, 10:46 am, CAMBRIDGE, MA 02139
Arrival at Unit, December 26, 2008, 6:25 am, CAMBRIDGE, MA 02139
Inbound Out of Customs, December 24, 2008, 4:17 am
Inbound Into Customs.

They said that they attempted to deliver it but since no one was there, a notice was left & the post could be picked up at the post office. I dashed off a mail to MIT but they are not responding to any mails till JAN 5th.
SO........ Is this cause for worry? Will my post be delivered safely on time? Why didn't MIT receive my post???
Thanks........

Notice left means that there was nobody at MIT to initial your package delivery and receive it.

YES IT IS AN ISSUE OF WORRY.

If MIT does not pick the package up in 5 BUSINESS DAYS, then the package will be returned to you.

So why wasn't my post picked up?????? I'm freaking out................... Should I send an e-mail to USPS asking them to hold my mail for a longer time????????

I guess due to the holidays, there was nobody to sign your package delivery confirmation receipt, international packages are delivered in the US via EXPRESS MAIL which requires initials of the receiver of the package, so that the postman can hand over the package to the recipient.

You can send an email to USPS but i doubt that they will agree to your issues, but send an email anyways.

If I were you, i would call the admissions office and ask them about the package. Also, i would send an email to admissions officer MATT too, describing him the whole issue.

BEST OF LUCK!

Where is Matt's email id. I searched mit.edu but couldn't find it anywhere. But there should be many more int'ls who must have the same situation as me, right????????
Second, what is the worst case scenario???? If the mail does get sent back to me(my teacher) & I then send it back again, will MIT accept it or will they reject it saying it was after the deadline???? If I explain the situtaion to them later on, will they understand???

thx a lot!!!

Yes, there will be int'ls with the same situation as yours. MIT is flexible with the recommendation letters to a certain extent. MIT will accept the package that you will send, if it is POSTMARKED by January 1.

MATT McGANN's email id is mcgann@mit.edu

You are welcome!!!

It will be fine to send the letters back if they are sent back to you, and it won't matter if it's after the deadline. Since this is not under your control, MIT will be very understanding.

I think the post office will hold it for a somewhat long time, though (when I had a similar situation once, I think the post office held my package for a month), so I would not be surprised if it's delivered once the admissions officers are back in the office after the holidays.

Thats reassuring...............
But i have a doubt. Now, will MIT have to send someone to get the post after the holidays( & if they have to, will they have enough time to do so?????) or will it be automatically redelivered to them by the postman after the holidays??????
Sorry, if this is dumb, but i don't know how the postal system works in the U.S.....

Probably because of the holidays no one would pick it up. It might get sent back to you though if no one does.

Usually the post office requires that someone come pick it up. But yours is certainly not the only signature-requiring package to be delivered to MIT during the holidays, so if they need to, I'm sure they will send someone to pick it up.

My post was delivered yesterday.... hurray...... thx everyone..
