Recommendation Letters???

Two questions:
First, is it acceptable to ask a foreign language teacher for a recommendation? Or does it have to be a teacher in english, humanities, math, or science?
Secondly, would it be in my benefit to ask an english teacher for a rec since writing is one of my strengths? The problem is that the english teacher i would love to ask I only had in 10th grade, and the other english teacher I only had for one semester, so I am afraid she doesn't know me well enough. Is it okay if I don't ask an english teacher?

thanks in advance

As a general rule of thumb, always ask the teachers that like you the most and know you the best. For me, I did not ask the teacher of the subject I was most interested in because I felt other teachers could write better recs for me.

See the second page on this thread for some discussion about using FL teachers for LORs at the most selective colleges:

Unless specifically stated otherwise by a college, I would consider FL a core subject and fine for LORs. Others may have a different opinion, if so, I’m very open to seeing evidence (college websites).

I agree that the teacher who knows you the best and will write you the best rec is your best choice.

thank you…so it seems i can ask foreign language teachers then
