Recommendation Letters

What are your thoughts on extra letter recommendations besides the 2 teacher and 1 counselor? I'm probably applying to large universities such as cornell, northwestern, etc.. would the extra letter (from the medical records volunteer deparment for instance) really make me stand out that much more, or is it just of trivial importance to admission officers?

Also, what are your thoughts or writing e-mails to admission officers saying you would like to catch up with them at a college fair or overnight visit? Is this out of line or does it just show even more that you have an interest in the college?

I’d say unless a college specifies that there is a maximum number of recommendations they will accept, then include the one that isn’t from a teacher. Anything that can enhance your application is a good thing. Just be sure that the activity you’re getting the extra recommendation for is something you were involved with in grades 9-12.

Regarding emails to admissions officers: I would first call the college and ask for the name of the officer that is assigned to your high school area. Once you establish who that person is and get their email address, I don’t see why it would hurt to send a message inquiring about when/if they will be available at your high school, local college fair or if they offer an overnight visit. I would be sure to word it like you are asking them (even though you may know about a job fair or overnight opportunity). This way they can ‘inform’ you and you won’t come off as too pushy. Then respond accordingly, thanking them and '…looking forward to the opportunity to meet with you." Your extra interest and effort will probably be noted.

Best of luck!!!

for recommendation letter to elite schools, i think the general rule is that Less is More.
