Good morning,

One of my recommendations is from a professor in one of the programs I am applying to. This professor was my advisor during my undergrad at a different school and has since moved to the program I am applying to. How much do you think this will help out with my application? I also have 7 years of work experience in the area I am planning on studying and researching. I meet all the requirements for admission as well.

Thanks for the help!

Aren’t you just answering your own question? It might or might not help. Why not wait and see?

I mean, it’ll probably help maybe slightly more than a regular recommendation letter. Obviously the department hired your old advisor for a reason and a recommendation from someone they know will be valued more than a recommendation from someone they don’t know. If he’s influential in the program, it’ll likely help out a good deal. What would be far more likely is if he’s on the adcom and is willing to go to bat for you and thinks you’re an outstanding student.
