So I've seen multiple threads about what gifts are appropriate to thank teachers for writing recommendations, as well as what to write in thank you cards.

My question is WHEN is the best time to give the cards/gifts? Would it be right after they have written them and the applications are sent in, or is it better to wait until April when we know where we have been accepted? I think the latter is better but I would like confirmation from all the experts on this forum. :) (Sorry if this question has already been asked somewhere else...)

Thanks!

Give the thank-you note right after the recommendations are written. You’re expressing thanks for the favor they did you --writing the recommendation letter. That’s what they have control over, not the results. Even if you don’t get in anywhere, they still did you a favor by writing the reccomendations.

In April, thank the recommenders again and let them know where you got in and where you plan to go. You can thank them in person or by writing another note.

Oh wow I didn’t know that.
Thanks!

Any other thoughts out there?

Agree 100% with NSM.

What if we need the teacher to write two recommendation letters? (Questbridge and Common App).

Should we give him the thank you note after he fills out both?

Fine to thank the teacher after both reccs are done unless there’s a couple of months between when they are done.

The recommendation is already written, but I still have 2 others that are still pending from other teachers… Can I just give them all at once in December? (Because that is when the application process will be totally done for me…) Or do you think the first teacher will be “waiting” in the meantime for an official thank you?
